when I start the car the abs light is off, then it comes on as I'm driving and stays on. This started about 2 wks ago, sometimes at a slower speed I'll feel the abs catch and grind.

If the ABS light is staying on the system has detected a fault and set a trouble code. A scanner will have to be hooked up to the diagnostic port under the dash and the trouble codes read. Once you have the codes it will send you in the direction of the problem.
What do you mean when you say it "catches and you hear it grind"? Perhaps your hearing the ABS modulator. The modulator does make a buzz sound when activated but it should only activate on sudden stops when the wheels begin to lock up.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. To start with check the Speed Sensor on the front and rear. Usually the issue is with the rear speed sensor which can be replaced easily and will cost you around $25-$40. There is a sensor at the top of the rear differential for the ABS system. When the ABS sensor on the diff goes bad the Speedo no longer will work, the odometer stops recording mileage and both brake and ABS light comes on. The sensor is inexpensive and can be changed in about 30 mins. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks

Thats fine the solution still remain the same as ABS light means that the issue is with the rear speed sensor. Moreover, from what you have described it is clear that it should be replaced. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

    Thanks

You need to have your breaks serviced by Qualified break specialist. Breaks can be dangerous for unqualified to fix. You are having trouble with ABS is common and breaks may not need replacing, problem can be as simple as resetting or replacing a piece. My advise is you have a free check done and you will know what it is causing this and inspection done to insure your car is safe to you and the others around you. The grind does not sound good. Have your breaks checked out, Break Stop can fix it.www.justbrakes.com/

First things first we need codes

some part stores has a good enough scanner to pull ABS codes but you might need assistance of a real garage

most of the time the ABS light is a result of a defective wheel speed sensor!

get me some codes and I'll give you a better idea what needs to be replaced or repaired

since I am solution #4 I am assuming you are seeking other opinions
I cannot see what advice they are giving up but I can see your posts
it appears they are asking you more questions then solutions
and based on your posts it still sounds like a wheel speed sensor

did you get codes pulled yet!!!!!

07 explorer sport trac, abs and traction control coming on at slow speed not allowing me to drive above 5mph??????????

Suggest you have it check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . Also do you hear any grinding noise ? I have seen a bad wheel bearing cause this problem . Unwanted ABS activation locks up the wheel . and the lights come on .

After getting new tires on the front of the van, the abs light now comes on intermittently and once in a while the brake pedal will pulsate and it makes a grinding noise

They may have damaged one of the ABS sensors in the front.
Take it back and have them check that their tech did not accidently unplug a sensor or damage it. What you think is grinding may be the abs coming on.

When appling brakes i sometimes hear grinding and ticking noise and abs light is on

A grinding noise is usually an indication that the brake pads are worn out. You may also have a defective wheel bearing causing this noise and in turn can cause the ABS light to come on due to poor sensor contact. Have the brakes and bearings inspected soon to avoid unnecessary costly repairs.

What does it mean when stabilitrak and abs light comes on. Once this happen a few minutes later when I brake it makes a grinding noise.

Same as with ALL vehicle problems---
when you have a check engine light on

You stop using it
Check for OBD Codes
Diagnose your codes
Component test-- to find a problem
Make the repair

With or without codes-- you can Google
ABS Braking Systems,Trac Control & many other
abs add-ons-- to learn about them

What about reading your owners manual !!

Fail to see how using a vehicle with
brakes grinding, would be safe

Brakes have to come apart once a year
when you have no problems

May have a problem with the hub assembly. some manufacturers combine the sensor and hub into one unit. check those
4X4: may be CV shaft issue. hard to say without hearing and inspecting the pickup.

Abs / brake light warning lights are both on. brakes sometimes squeel and other times grinds

the ABS light comes on because there has been a fault detected in the ABS system. If you notice the "grind" when making slow stops than you have an issue known as overactive ABS.

Your best bet is to have the ABS system scanned for trouble codes. Your local parts store may be able to do this for free otherwise you will need an ABS specific code reader, a high end multifunction scan tool, or bring it in to a shop to have an ABS diagnosis preformed.

Once you know what code(s) are present you will have a much better idea of where to start looking to fix the problem.

Post the codes here and I'll be happy to help you out further.

it sounds like u have a wheel bearing goin bad or signal droppin out now and then, next time the light comes on stop by your mechanics if u can and see if he can scan it,do not shut it off once the light comes on so he can retieve the code, this type of failure is hard to catch sometimes, hope this helps

99 ford windstar hear grinding when wheel turns

Mechanic replaced the rack and pinon that was leaking-that was the noise, air getting into the hose. The engine was a seperate problem and the IMP?? was replaced. The part was cheeper than the labor cost for this one!!
