Hello,

Thanks for using FixYa.

Sad to say but only the dealership can disable/reset the anti theft system for your Safari. They will need to use a special electronic gadget provided by GM that will disable and reset the anti theft system. Some dealerships have this, some don't. Make sure that the dealership that you visit carries the GMC make.

I hope this helps. Thanks and good day.

Hi! Please try this, open the hood and remove the battery connectors and let it sit for atleast 10mins., this should reset the system. Put the battery connectors again and see how it goes. It may resolve the problem. Hope this helps and have a good one!

Your ignition key revolves on this system to start the engine so disconnecting it is not an option

my car left me stranded in the mountains because of the anti-theft device. I ended up in the dealers, paying a lot, but they changed the housing of the steering column by the ignition where it supposedly caused a short and wouldn't allow the car to start. That was 2 yrs ago and it is acting up again.

Looking for instructions to bypass, remove, disable the passlock anti theft system in my 1998 gmc safari, so I can start and run the darn thing.

Your problem may be a bad ignition lock switch it is a common problem usually caused by worn ignition keys. I would get a new key and see if that don't solve your problem. If that don't work then you need to replace the lock itself they have a security feature built in them that won't allow the car to start unless the proper key is installed (sometimes a new key works) this prevent thieves from taking your car by using a screwdriver or by hot wiring ...This security feature is in the lock itself not in the key GM did put it in the key but not for your vehicle

AWD light!

This light is telling you that a problem exists in the AWD system, the light reset's everytime the key is turned off, then because the system fault s still there it comes back on, the 20 second delay is the time required for the system to test itself.
