Question about Toyota Tercel
Check to make sure both bolts that hold the starter are tight. For now, you may need to add some metal shims to give the starter some added clearance so it does not hit the flywheel. Another thing that might be going on is your flywheel is missing teeth or is warped and this is causing the starter to grind and make the clunking sound. I would take the transmission off and see what the flywheel looks like, you might need to replace it
