Question about Toyota Tercel

1 Answer

I just changed the starter assembly on my Toyota Tercel 92. Manual Transmission. When I start it, it still does the hard clunk like it did before I switched starter. It even drags a little longer then the one single hard clunk. What's the deal with that? Also there's a noise that follows - like a loss cable or something like grinding noise - when I engage the engine in first and second gear. It use to happen only in first gear.

Check to make sure both bolts that hold the starter are tight. For now, you may need to add some metal shims to give the starter some added clearance so it does not hit the flywheel. Another thing that might be going on is your flywheel is missing teeth or is warped and this is causing the starter to grind and make the clunking sound. I would take the transmission off and see what the flywheel looks like, you might need to replace it

Someone else suggested that it may be the flywheel that's getting there. How expensive of a job might this be? Replacing the flywheel. Can I do it myself?

To replace the flywheel, you will need to separate the transmission from the motor. If you are going to do that, you might as well add a new clutch because the flywheel is in the same area. Your flywheel just may need to be resurfaced at a machine shop but you will not know until it is inspected. Getting it resurfaced would cost you less money but it would be up to a certified mechanic to decide it it will need to be replaced or just resurfaced. If it is missing teeth then it will most definitely need to be replaced.

Where is the starter relay on my 1993 Toyota Tercel?

The starter relay(s) on the Tercel are under the dash on the passenger side; easily accessed by removing the kick panel and the glove box and panel as an assembly; panel held in place by 4 ten mm screws. Some models have only one starter relay and some have 2.

If you have 2 they are on the same bracket, are identical part numbers and are both labeled Toyota starter relay; they are light green from the factory.

85 tercel clunking in rear when braking

Have someone jack up each wheel and spin it manually with someone lightly stepping on the brake pedal. Listen for dragging noises on each side, and if needed take each rim/tire off and check brake assembly and caliper mounting bolts.

1992 toyota tercell wont start, will push start on 2nd gear. please help

Does the engine turn over at all when you try to start it?

Check the wires going to your starter solenoid to make sure everything is secure. If all wires are secure, remove the starter and take it to Autozone to get the starter and solenoid tested.

Your starter or solenoid is probably bad.

I also have a 92 tercel. The starter is on the back side of the engine/transmission near the firewall.

I think two 15mm screws hold it on. And its easier to get to and remove from the drivers side of the engine. Remove the duct going to the intake manifold and the air cleaner assembly(the plastic thing that the air filter is inside) to be able to pull it out more easily. And unplug the sensor on the back of the air cleaner housing. After you pull out the air filter, there are 3 screws that hold the air filter housing on. On the very bottom of the filter housing.

Started motor problems on Toyota Camry 2000

You need a new starter bendix, or a whole starter. Best do it soon before you tear the teeth of the flex plate. Once you do that you have to pull the transmission to change it.

What kind of starter does a 1993 Toyota Tercel 1.5 engine take

That is a problem with some vehicle parts, and about the only way to know for sure is to look for a part # or name on the starter itself, otherwise you have to hope they stock the one you need. Yes I see one is direct drive, and the other is gear reduction. May I suggest, if you can't take it off & get in for another, try to get a clear digital camera picture of it, print it off & take it to parts store for them to compare to the picture they have.

I would make sure 75W90 gear oil was used when the fluid was changed, 80W90 can be used but I have seen the transmission becoming very hard to shift when very cold.
