The more important question is " why did the head gasket go , and what other damage was done " Could have warped heads or many other expensive problems.

Since the motor may have overheated, you need to accept that the entire motor may need to be replaced.

If the Durango is in good shape otherwise, worst case would be spending ~$2500-4000 for a used motor installed.

If only issue is the head gaskets, you can probably get away with ~$1000 or less.

How much on average is the cost of a head gasket replacement? I am thinking of buying a stratus with this need.

At a shop, at least $500 for an inline 4 cyl, no less than $800 for a V6. Also, you may find that the head(s) is cracked, increasing the cost even more. I would not recommend that you pay or sign anything until you have had it looked at by a mechanic.

Yes this is reparable both the head-gasket and the oil leaks.

Just price up the cost of a second hand motor and the repairs of the head-gasket and oil leaks.

Go with the cheapest.

Thinking about buying a 1994 BMW 320i because i've always wanted a BMW, although the head gasket is completely blown and undriveable. What are the chances of me finding a mechanic to do the job on such an...

head gasket repairs will cost you thousands 2 at the least as it involves stripping down half your engine, if the engine starts and you can run the car for more than 40 mins you are in luck, there is this stuff called SEAL UP i think the brand is CARGO you pour it in your radiator and it chemically welds your head gaskets and other cracks back together and lasts for ages and actually works brilliantly assuming the crack isn't to big used it on my car last nite as i had blown head gasket and it runs great now

Im thinking about buying a disco there is a

One simple piece of advice. If you are thinking of buying this particular Discovery - don't.

The reason for this is that although potentially this is an easy fix and is likely to be a thermostat that needs replacing (jammed shut) - there is a risk that the jeep has been running for some time with this overheating problem. At least you don't know how long it has been driven like this.

The risk of driving an overheating engine is that the cylinder head could be warped and even if you resolve the overheating issue - other serious engine damage may already have occurred.

This could easily turn into a very expensive mess. If I was to view a car with an overheating issue like this I would simply walk away. Even if the head is not warped there is a higher risk of a head gasket blowing at some point and this again involves considerable expense in labor terms.

There are plenty of good Discoverys out there. My advice? Keep your money in your pocket until you find one.

Hope this helps. Please do rate this answer. Thanks.

Can the Head Gaskets be replaced on a 2001 Cadillac Seville STS Northstar without removing the engine? I am thinking about buying one that needs a head gasket replaced.

Yes , but it is very time consuming and if you have never replaced head gaskets before then I would not suggest that this vehicle be your first.

I have a 98 dodge intripid. The mechcanic said it has a blown head gasket. He said it would be cheaper to just get another engine. Can anyone tell me what it would cost to replace gaskets. I checked on new...

Problem is once the heads are off you need to have them checka nd probably planed and rebuilt. If the heads are also cracked than you will buy heads. In my area a head gasket job costs around 2-2500$ if it is a v6 15-1800$ for 4 banger. USed engine is a possibility but you can get a bum engine. I vote for sending to machine shop and having rebuilt. Other option is finding an already rebuilt engine and dropping in.
If minor leak you can try alumaseal. Awesome stuff. Is a fine aluminum powder taht fixes small leaks. Major blowouts can't be fixed by alumaseal.
