Is there a way to mute the low oil pressure warning chime. I have a bad oil sender unit and want to mute warning until I can get the sender replaced.

Unfortunately no. But you can try something else: disconnect the sender.

Where is the sender located? How difficult is it to access?

  • Azrael SRL May 29, 2010

The oil pressure sensor is underneath the intake manifold at the right rear of the engine, beside the distributor - quite difficult to access if you don't have small hands. Or you could remove the intake manifold to access it.

What about removing the fuse. Is so where is the fuse.

  • Azrael SRL May 30, 2010

The  is no separate fuse for it - the sensor is "powered" directly by the instrument panel in the dash.

  • Azrael SRL May 30, 2010

There isn't a separate fuse for it, the sensor is powered by the instrument panel directly.

There is no way to mute it. You can however disconnect the power to the chime.

How do I disconnect the power to the chime?

  • NOT ME May 29, 2010

Start the engine and the chime can be heard. You will then have to get under the dash and locate it. Once you do, simply disconnect power wire connected to the chime. It should not be that hard to find. After you replace the oil sending unit be sure and hook the chime back up. Would it not be far less trouble to just go ahead and replace the oil pressure sending unit now unless finances prohibit it which I fully understand?

  • fordd25 May 29, 2010

I don't have a clue where the plug for the chime is under the dash. Where should I start looking? Would it be easier to in plug the fuse to the chime? If so, where would I find it?

  • NOT ME May 29, 2010

That would work if the chime was on a dedicated fuse all by itself. It will not be as other things will be on the same circuit with the chime. So if you pull the fuse you will kill other things. You can give that a try and see what else stops working.

  • fordd25 May 29, 2010

As I asked in the earlier link. Where is the plug under the dash? Where is the fuse?

  • NOT ME May 29, 2010

Your owner's manual will list the fuses but it will more than likely not tell you which fuse controls the chime. You will just have to start pulling them out one at a time. I would pull the instrument cluster fuse first. You are going to end up with outer things not working if you try to pull the fuse. You ask where is the chime. With the engine running you will hear the chime. Get under the dash and listen for it and follow the sound to the chime. It will be on the driver's side, and I would suspect neat the fuse panel or on on behind the kick panel. Once you find it simply unhook power from the chime.

Why would the oil light stay on?

That depends on the type of oil warning light being displayed. There are 2 types of warning lights

1. Low oil pressure light which all cars have
2. low oil level light which some cars have.

Low OIL PRESSURE warning means the oil pressure is below minimum and when this happens there will be insufficient lubrication of many engine parts because sufficient oil cannot get to all parts of the engine it is required to lubricate. Until the cause is identified and rectified the warning light will remain. If you run your engine with low oil pressure you will cause expensive damage to internal engine components.

Low OIL LEVEL warning means the oil in the sump has dropped to a dangerously low level (which may be due to an oil leak or abnormal oil consumption by the engine.) This warning means the oil level needs to be topped up and the warning will stay displayed until you top up the oil. Running the engine with low oil will cause expensive engine damage.
Since it is a 2 minute job, Oil levels should be checked fortnightly as a minimum, together with radiator coolant and power steering fluid levels, if you run the car most days each week as most people do.

It is possible for a warning light to remain displayed when the cause has been dealt with because there is a problem with the sender unit. However it needs to be established with alternative checks that the problem has been fixed before investigating if there is a problem with the warning light itself.

What causes the oil check light to show while there is enough oil

Low oil pressure.
Causes
1. Warn oil pump
2. Warn engine bearings
3. Wrong grade of engine oil
Could also be a bad oil pressure sender or electrical connector.
Remove oil pressure sender and and fit a manual gauge to check the true oil pressure.

Where is the oil pump situated on a CateraS 2001.Have low oil pressure when idling or at a red light.

Hi Rejean, I suggest you have the oil pressure sender unit inspected before thinking of replacing the oil pump. If it's the sender unit the job will be a fraction of the cost of an oil pump replacement, which means opening the engine. Regards John

Low oil pressure reading

check that the oil level is not over the mark as this causes foaming of the oil and loss of pressure. At 80km/hr you will be doing around 3 grand and that will be enough to whip the excess oil into froth.. Too much oil is worse than too little oil.

Low oil pressure warning comes on

Make sure oil level is full, possible faulty oil pressure sender. replace sender and recheck, if warning still comes up, possible internal engine issue.

The oil light on my 1998 Camry is on but I just got the oil changed

If it is the oil pressure warning light showing, the next thing to do is to remove the oil pressure sender unit and screw in a gauge to see if the sender is at fault.

After that it could be that the over-pressure relief valve in the oil pump has stuck open.

Gauges work fine when engine's started, then oil gauge falls below zero and warning light comes on saying "Check gauges," so I check the oil and transmission fluid levels and these are fine but...

start by checking the ground strap to the engine, and engine to body. The oil pressure sender unit may be bad. You may have to hook up an oil pressure gauge to the oil pressure sender port to verify proper oil pressure. Senders are cheap- I would just replace it and go from there.

2007 Chevy Silverado oil pressure gauge fluxuating, setting off computer on dash reading "engine oil low" also warning bell sounds. Thanks!

If you are lucky , replacing the oil pressure sender unit will solve the problem. Your truck might have perfectly good oil pressure , but a bad sensor. OR you might actually have low oil pressure , which is not good , and will be expensive to fix. Good luck.

My oil light is flashing & chiming when I drive. But my oil isn't low

Sounds like the low oil sensor is bad or corroded. Check and clean. If that doesn't fix, replace it.

I think you have a suspect oil pressure sender unit. Replace it as they are cheap and need to be reliable and it will be cheaper than getting the oil pressure tested. If the light still stays on with the new sender you may have internal wear or a partial blockage. If the light stays on you need to have it urgently checked by a mechanic or you could risk serious engine damage.
