The Air conditioning compressor will only run for short periods

The Air conditioning compressor will only run for a few minutes then stops, it gets cold when it is running but shuts on and off after only a few seconds. it is on a 96 ford mustang 3.8. Freon is OK, I had that checked. If I let the car idel for a shortperiod, the compressor won't run at all.

Would suggest replacing the high pressure switch as a precaution you won't loose gas as there is a schrader valve under the switch. Would also check operation of condenser fan. When a/c last charged did you give it a good vac down to remove moisture as ice can form in the tx valve causing the same problem. Regards Eric

You said the freon was checked then the problem may be the pressure switch located on the accumulator. It may be faulty.

The AC keeps cutting in and out?

New compressor? Was it filled enough? High pressure switch could be on it's way out. Especially if it did it before the compressor change. The relay could also be going out. Swap it with another.

no it could be air condition clutch that engage/disengage the air condition compressor and disengage it through the pulley or could be the pulley bearings one of them . also check the solenoid that controls that clutch .

check the cooling fans and air flow through radiator,,,,ensure there is no plastic bag stuck over the radiator and look in between the radiator and condenser as those can find their way inside that very small distance between the radiator and a/c condenser. Fans and airflow is a must.

had the same problem with my ford a few years back, found that the rubber seal on the piston in the compressor had run dry and it was too hard for the compressor to push the piston up and down the bore which cut the power to the compressor and you had to stop the car turn it off for a couple of minutes and restart it and the compressor would pump air for another couple of minutes and stop again.
I solved the problem by replacing the shocks with a pair of pump up shocks that have a valve like a tyre valve and you pump them up at the service station
hope this helps
