Question about 1995 Eagle Talon

The tension on the timing belt won't loosen to be put back on and i dont know the timing mark.

These belt are a little difficult to do. They remain tight and you end up rolling the belt on to install. Once it is on and in place, then adjust a little tighter with the tensioner.

Having trouble putting the timing belt back on


belts have no timing marks on the belt
you have to set the timing marks on the cam shaft/s and crank to the correct position, and loosen off the tensioner puller
if it has a hydraulic tensioner you have to push the tensioner all the way back into the body and hold it there as you fit the belt
remember that you cannot turn any thing to get aligmemnt unless you loosen of all the valves ( rockers completely) or you will bend valves. when the belt is off.

I have this 89 acura legend 2.7l v6 timing belt removed and the water pump removed, the old pump failed which caused the belt to fail, i have new parts and the pump installed only i dont understand to...


Hi, here is what you need to do. Get all of the timing marks lined up as indicated in the picture below. Put the belt on. Without moving the gears off their marks, make the belt tight across the cam gears and then down the right side to the crank gear. All of the slack must be on the left side to be taken up by the tensioner. Release the tensioner to tighten the belt and then verify the marks are still aligned. If the marks are not aligned, loosen the tensioner just enough to turn the gear that needs to be realigned. After tensioning the belt, rotate the crankshaft clockwise 720 degrees and recheck the timing marks. I have pasted the book procedure below. Please let me know if you still have questions. You must get this right.

  1. If the crankshaft or camshafts have been turned with the timing belt removed, remove the spark plugs and advance the crankshaft about 15 degrees beyond TDC of No. 1 cylinder. Make sure the camshaft sprockets are properly aligned with the marks and return the crankshaft to the TDC mark.
  2. Install the belt in sequence on the crankshaft, the front camshaft, water pump and tensioner pulleys, then the rear camshaft.
  3. To adjust the tension, loosen the tensioner pulley bolt about 1 / 2 turn. The spring will automatically set the proper tension. Torque the bolt to 31 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  4. Rotate the crankshaft 6 turns clockwise and check that the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshafts align properly. Adjust the timing belt tension again by rotating the crankshaft to the align the blue mark on the pulley with the pointer. Loosen and retorque the tensioner pulley bolt.
  5. Install the remaining parts in reverse order. Torque the crankshaft pulley bolt to 83 ft. lbs. (115 Nm). When installing the side mount bracket, torque the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).

I had to change my head gasket on my 2001 VW Passat. That went great but know when I try to put back my timing belt it will not start. I have tried everything. I have alligned all the marks and still...


After you aligned the timing marks and tightened up the tensioner pulley, did you re-check your timing marks? Usually when you tighten the tensioner it will pull the cam and crank out of alignment. Line up the crankshaft first and then check to see where your cam gear is. If it is not lined up, loosen the tensioner and move the cam gear ahead to line it back up. If it doesn't line up perfectly then go AHEAD until the marks line up and put the belt back on. If the gear is on the mark and the belt teeth don't line up, move the gear ahead until you can get the belt on,but no more than a full tooth on the belt. Tighten your tensioner and check again. At most the cam sprocket should only be off about 1/2 tooth from the marks and it should be ahead not behind. Re-align your distributor to #1 and it should start. Hope this helps.

How to replace water pump on 2000 volkswagon beetle with1.8 liter turbo engine?


The following steps need to be taken to remove the pump.

1. Remove the ribbed belt. Compress the tensioner and remove the belt. Remove the ribbed belt tensioner.

2. Remove the upper timing belt cover.

3. Align your timing belt marks. The following pictures are for the cam timing mark, the flywheel timing mark for an automatic, flywheel timing for a manual and the marks on the harmonic balancer.

4. loosen the timing belt. There is a 13mm head nut that keeps the tensioner in place. Loosen this nut and turn the tensioner clockwise to get come slack in the belt. You are going to need a tool to get tension back on the belt. I use the tool pictured (picture of how to tension the belt) but know of people using snap ring pliers to rotate the tensioner.

5. Slip the timing belt off of the cam drive sprocket and off of the water pump.

6. Remove the water pump retaining bolts pictured and remove the water pump. The pump can often be stuck in place. A screwdriver carefully used can help in getting the pump

7. Moisten the o-ring with coolant before installing the new pump. Install the new pump.

8. Install the belt and tension as shown in the picture attached above. Turn the engine over by hand through a full revolution of the cam gear. Re-check the timing marks. The marks will often be off, don't be discouraged by this, it happens to everyone. If the marks are off loosen the belt and slip it the amount of teeth needed to align the marks.

9. Install the items taken off during the removal of the pump, fill the system with coolant and start the engine. The system will pretty much bleed itself out as it reaches operating temperature.

Timing belt broke ,just replace it but it won`t crank.it sounds like electric priblem


Only the 2.3 liter diesel is an interference engine. The 2.3 Liter gas is not an interference engine. I would guess the belt was not installed correctly. The belt broke so the cam was then out of alignment with the crankshaft. Unless you aligned it correctly it will not start. BTW, the belt must be replaced every 60,000 miles. I asume you have the timing cover off, put it back on and set the crankshaft at the 0 mark on the timing cover, remove the cover and don't touch the crank. near the bottom of the cam gear is a protruding piece of plastic with three raised areas, set the cam timing mark at the first pointer, closest to the passenger side . on the back part of the timing cover is a v shaped pointer set the distributor gear mark at the pointer, remove the distributor cap and verify that the rotor is pointing at #1. Loosen both bolts on the tensioner and using a pry bar carefully pry the tensioner away from the distributor gear, tighten the small bolt on the tensioner. install the new belt starting at the crank, then the distributor gear, then the cam, then over the tensioner pulley. loosen the small bolt and the tensioner will adjust automatically. tighten the tensioner bolts and turn the engine over by hand 2 or 3 times and make sure all marks line up ( the cam mark should now be at the center pointer with the crank at 0). I find it handy to paint a reference mark for the crank inside the timing cover.

Changing the timing belt on a Hundai


  1. Remove all necessary components for access to the timing belt cover, then remove the cover.
  2. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise and align the timing marks so No. 1 piston will be at Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke.
  3. Loosen the tensioning bolt and the pivot bolt on the timing belt tensioner. Move the tensioner as far as it will go toward the water pump. Tighten the adjusting bolt.
  4. Mark the timing belt with an arrow showing direction of rotation.
  5. Remove the timing belt.
  6. If defective, remove the timing belt tensioner.
  7. Align the timing marks of the camshaft sprocket and check that the crankshaft timing marks are still in alignment.
  8. If removed, install the timing belt tensioner, spring and spacer with the bottom end of the spring free. Tighten the adjusting bolt slightly with the tensioner moved as far as possible away from the water pump.
  9. Install the free end of the spring into the locating tang on the front case.
  10. Position the timing belt over the crankshaft sprocket, then over the camshaft sprocket. Slip the back of the belt over the tensioner wheel.
  11. Turn the camshaft sprocket in the opposite of its normal direction of rotation until the straight side of the belt is tight and be sure the timing marks align.
    NOTE If the timing marks are not properly aligned, shift the belt 1 tooth at a time in the appropriate direction until they are aligned.
  12. Loosen the tensioner mounting bolts so the tensioner works, without the interference of any friction, under spring pressure. Be sure the belt follows the curve of the camshaft pulley so the teeth are engaged all the way around. Correct the path of the belt, if necessary.
  13. Tighten the tensioner adjusting bolt, then the tensioner pivot bolt to 15-18 ft. lbs. (20-26 Nm).
    NOTE Bolts must be tightened in the stated order or tension won't be correct.
  14. Turn the crankshaft 1 turn clockwise until timing marks again align to seat the belt.
  15. Loosen both tensioner attaching bolts and let the tensioner position itself under spring tension. Retighten the bolts.
  16. Check belt tension by putting a finger on the water pump side of the tensioner wheel and pull the belt toward the water pump. The belt should move toward the pump until the teeth are approximately 1 / 2 of the way across the head of the tensioner adjusting bolt. Re-tension the belt, if necessary.
  17. Install the timing belt covers and all other related components.

this is the best guide/instructions I could find on the net and I do allot of this.
take the timing cover off the belt there should be a gear below the camshaft pully its a tensioner use a peice of chalk and mark the very top of the cam pully and the very bottom of the crank pully do your best not to turn them loosen the tensioner pully the belt will loosen up take it off put the new one on if you turned the pully put it back slowly tighten the belt when its tight if the pully turned when tightening pull the slack out by hand then tighten it both chalk marks should be lined up if they are start the car always unplug the battery first and dont rotate the pullys more than a few inches if nessacery when the belt is off you could cause damage to the valves

Can any body help put cambelt back together


You need to rotate the cam until timing marks on the sprocket are in line with the head, then make sure crank shaft timing mark is lined up. Install the belt. Might have to loosen the timing belt tensioner. Put timing belt tensioner back on, rotate the crank shaft with a wrench first to make sure there's no interference. Next, check compression.

I hope you've solved the problem by now, but there are alignment marks on the crank shaft (top pulley), idler (lower side), and cam shaft (smaller, bottom pulley) which should be aligned with stationary marks on the timing belt rear cover.

The belt has marks that align with the aforementioned marks (lines). The double marks on the belt align with the camshaft marks and the single marks with the others.

Loosen the tensioner clamp (nut) to allow the spring loaded tensioner to press on the belt and retighten the nut.

Rotate the crank shaft (clockwise, probably two revolutions) and make sure the pulley marks realign to the marks on the cover (they don't have to realign with the marks on the belt).

Rotate the crank shaft a full revolution once the belt is on and check that alignment is preserved.

Periodically loosen and retension the tensioner nut (access through a hole in the cover) to ensure that tension is maintained as the belt relaxes.
