An easy test to see if the alternator Is charging, is to place a paper clip against the rear bearing cup (the back of the alternator case in the center) While the engine is running, the paper clip will be attracted to the bearing if the alternator is good. Do not short the paper clip to any wire terminals to avoid a burn hazard. Be careful of rotating belt and pulleys.
Loud knocking noise like metal clashing, ran car with no oil,Big hole on the side of the block, all these come to mind. But maybe its just the drive belt that turns the alternator to charge the battery or the water pump bearing not allowing the drive belt to turn appropriately to charge the battery. Inspect the drive belt.
Next time you replace your battery you need to find one with more cold cranking amps. It is much harder for the battery to produce the voltage needed in the cold. Batteries produce their peak amperage when new which may explain why you have no problems for a year.
