Red hot exhaust manifold downpipe

Just repaced engine (2.8L) in a 2001 A6 Quattro---seems to be runing well but after just a couple of minutes the manifold downpipe is glowing red hot.do not have a scan tool available---the engine lite is on and it smells like it may be running a little rich.don't want to run too long for fear of damaging the ceramics in the cat converter.looking for suggestions as to where the problem might be---ign coil?, stuck injector?, resticted pipe? Thanks,Dan.

You most likely have a plugged or restricted catalytic converter/s.

Catalytic converter

The exhaust downpipe is glowing red with heat?
To be honest, that may be fuel-air /and or cylinder head problem. A downpipe gets very hot, yes, but they don't glow red.

A faulty oxygen sensor can cause the catalytic converter to overheat - with disastrous results.

If you're not sure what you're doing don't mess around with things. get somebody who knows what they are doing to look at your car and give you an opinion

What would cause the cat to glow red hot ? Also shows code p0174

What you have is a rich condition! Your cat is glowing because it is working overtime trying to burn unburt gases. Your vehicle is dumping in too much fuel for one reason or another.

2004 mazda tribute idles high and manifold glows red hot after only 20 minutes after running

When you say manifold, I assume you mean the exhaust manifold. If its the one you can see (there is an exhaust manifold on the back of the engine also for the rear 3 cylinders) its a clogged or fried catalytic converter. There are a couple of catalytic converter cleaners on the market you can try, but most likely it will need to be replaced. Was there another problem recently i.e. bad coil pack etc?

Engine overheats and heater blowing cold air

You have air trapped in system , change thermostat , bleed air from system , let it run hot while adding coolant with blower full blast on all front and rear heaters .

Hi,recently noticed a smoke(smells like exhaust smoke) coming from underneath my drivers side wheel arch when I start the engine on my Audi A6 1.9tdi.What could be the problem..?

There are couplings that hook the manifold to the exhaust.... flex pipes.. about the size of large can of soup... they allow the engine to flex when you punch the gas.... they meet on both sides right underneath the bottom of the engine.... Google "audi a6 flex pipe" you' ll see them on ebay..... its the braided part... Go anywhere but MIDAS! to have it fixed... about $225 per side... That's what my problem was...... good luck

Diagnose code po171 ?

Check engine code P0171 is the O2 sensor bank 1, which means that its the O2 sensor closest to the engine located usually just off the exhaust manifold or on the downpipe from the exhaust manifold, just means that it isnt functioning correctly. Hope this helps.
