Question about 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass

1 Answer

My 1998 olds cutlass is leaking anti freeze. Have you happen to hear of this before? If so do you know how a DIY can fix the problem? Do you know how much the parts might cost and if I can get a manual or get the steps needed to guide me in the process? Thanks, Dan

First thing you have to do is determine where the leak is coming from. Once you know that we can give you help with how to repair. The leak could be a easy or hard repair. You could have a hose going bad the whole way to an engine problem. If you can not find the leak you could take the car to a repair shop and ask them to pressure check the system for you to fdind the leak.

Where is the freeze out plug located on a 98 olds cutlass it's leaking but don't know coming from but Its leaking down motor and running down the motor l bottom of engine. Thanks.

too new to rot and not cold enough anywhere to freeze, so I would go looking for a leak, this freeze plug is small like a quarter and pressed into the block at various places, you can find them easily, I bet you have a head gasket problem or a hose that is spraying on something, clean the affected area? best you can and let it idle and try to locate leak as it heats up , a freeze plug with a tiny hole will usually spray straight away and downward from motor . prob hard to replace with motor in, I have used a puller and a screw, then a hammer and a socket, but no guarantees there ..

This morning my car wouldnt start . replaced the battery and now no noise. temp is below freezing. what could be my problem?

have a compression test done to check for cracked head and cracked cylinder bores. Water is unforgiving when it turns to ice and will crack engine blocks and heads very easily. Have a pressure test done on the coolant system to find the leaks. Now more than ever it is extremely important to have the anti-freeze in the coolant at the right mix as old coolant will be below that required to prevent freezing of the water.

1988 oldsmobile cutlass cieara not overheating but windows inside continuously fogging over any answers...oil changes good everything runs good fan is kicking on appropriately car is driven by 75 yr old...

Fogging of the windows inside is usually caused by a heater core leaking.
That is located under the dashboard on the passenger side. If you have an odor of anti-freeze or the floor is a little wet on that side, that's a sure sign of it leaking. Have someone check for that.

CHANGE THERMOSTAT

Not a major task on your Cutlass...trace the upper radiator hose to the top of the motor...(intake manifold) you will find the thermostat inside the housing connection...held down by 2 10mm bolts...your replacement should be rated at 195 degrees...(usually the only one available for your V-6...Be sure to inspect your hoses for wear...you will lose (spill) some anti-freeze while removing the thermostat housing...I also recommend to buy a housing gasket as well as the inside gasket seal...these do not always come with the thermostat...Also use gasket sealant as no leaks are attainable...:) Have some anti-freeze handy to top off your overflow system after the installation is complete...you need to inspect while idling to be sure no leaks, and correct amount of anti-freeze in your overflow...2 measures are engine cold...and engine hot...Hope this helps...:)

I can smell anti-freeze when my heater is on

inside the car?

you possibly have a heater core leak....is the pass. floor mat wet or damp....most times when a heater core is leaking, you can actually taste it in the air....it's actually sweet.

have it fixed, or bypass the core itself if it gets really bad.

hope this helps...

No heat , antifreez leak not visable...

A car this new should have a warranty right? the only other place for anti-freeze to go is through a blown headgasket into your oil. Pull out your oil dipstick and make sure it is not milky in color. If not check behind the engine and see if any coolant lines going into the firewall are leaking. When inside the car do you smell steaming coolant(anti-freeze) or hear gurgling? The temp gauge that stays on is the overheat indicator?

1998 cadillac catera anti-freeze leak

First things first don't use Dexcool.

It would happen only once in a while likely because the overflow bottle doesn't always fill to the point of where the leak is located. It would be very easy to unbolt the bottle and fill it with water to find the leak and patch it up.

Anti freeze is deposited on my windshield when heat is turned on

You may have a leak in the heater core or the hoses to the heater core located under the dash. check to see if there is any moisture under your dash in the carpeting.fix the leak, and you will fix the cause of antifreeze on the windshield.
