Hello, as you know this is a safety feature so as to not put in gear without hitting brake. You may have a bad brake switch. Check for brake lights. In the meantime, there maybe a small cutout opening about size of dime located near shifter. Pop off little cover and insert screwdriver to move solenoid arm while trying to push button and move from park. I put a pic below. You are trying to move the actiuator solenoid. If you have the owners manual, it iwll explain how to over ride "shift interlock" as well as 911 to move out of park.
Below is a diagram of the system

No hole in top cover, removed cover, there is a hole, pressed down in the hole but nothing happened.

then something is jamming the linkage and keeping it from releasing, you will need to pull the top of the shift console and manually release the lock rod

2002 Forester will not go into park or reverse. Key will not come out. Manual says use screw driver and then take to dealer immediately. Is this a hardware or electronic issue? Will I break something with...

If your key will not come out of the ignition switch then the lock mechanism inside it is already bad and will need to be replaced. There is a good possibility that your vehicle not shifting out of park is related to that as well.

How do you change the drive shift light on a 1998 Subaru forester?

Carefully pry the cover from around the shifter, usually rear toward front easiest. Then you will see the light fixture. If you still don't see it and need to you can remove the 2 screws at the rear which release the cover from floor pan. then you can lift it to reach easier. Hope this helps and have a good day.

Tailgate stuck closed

Push handle to completly return then try unlock, then see if it will open. Handles rust and will not let it return all the way to allow lock to release.
