Question about Kia Sedona

Guage indictes overheating condition but never steams or boils over. both fans and thermostat working properly. no visual leaks and seems to not loose fluid. External ir temp gauge show top hose area of radiator running about 180 and the lower hose are reads about 110, indicating to me flow and cooling. i drained oil but not exactly sure how to tell if there is water mixed in from possible head gasket issue. the oil seemed a little off color being browner that is was burnt black. is there an easy test i can do on the oil as i saved it

The thermostat that governs the running of the radiator fans is different to the temperature sender to the display, Check out the temperature sender for proper operation and possible loose connection.

thermostat or clogged radiator you would see the water pump leaking go to the water pump and try to move the pulley back and forth take the belt off and check for free turning no grinding I'm pretty sure the thermostat's closed but the belt could be slipping to so check the tension on it if its to loose it will slip and not rotate the water pump pulley at the proper rpm's

Vehicle overheating tips


If your vehicle engine coolant temperature gauge indicates overheating, if you experience a loss of power,or if you hear a loud knocking or pinging noise, the engine has probably overheated. You should follow this procedure............

Pull safe off the road, stop the vehicle and turn on our emergency flasher. Put the transmission in "P" (automatic) or neutral (manual) and apply the parking brake. Turn off the air conditioning if it is being used.

If coolant or steam is boiling out of the radiator or reservoir, stop the engine. Wait until the steam subsides before opening the hood. If there is no coolant boiling over the steam, leave the engine running. CAUTION: To avoid personal injury, keep the hood closed until there is not steam. Escaping steam or coolant is a sign of very hing pressure.

Visually check to see if the engine drive belt (fan belt) is broken or loose. Lock for obvious coolant leaks from the radiator, hoses, and under the vehicle. However, note that water draining from the air conditioning is normal if it has been used. CAUTION: When the engine is running, keep hands and clothing away from the moving fan engine drive belt.

If the engine drive belt is broken or the coolant is leaking, stop the engine immediately and call your mechanic of assistance.

If the engine drive belt is okay and there are no obvious leaks, you may help the engine cool down more quickly by running it at about 1500 rpm for a few minutes with the accelerator pedal lightly depressed.

Check the coolant reservoir. If it is dry, add coolant to the reservoir while the engine is running. Fill it about half full. CAUTION:Do not attempt to remove the radiator cap when the radiator are hot. Serious injury could result from scalding hot fluid and steam blown out under pressure.

After the engine coolant temperature has cooled to normal, again check the coolant level in the reservoir. If necessary, bring it up to half full again. Serious coolant loos indicates a leak in the system. You should have it checked as soon as possible at your mechanic's workshop.

If the steam is rising from the radiator and not from the overflow tank or hose then you do have a leak.. in the radiator. check for a cracked tank or fitting where the hoses connect. If it is making steam the guage is probably defective. Find out where that steam is coming from ! If the car is making steam the rad fan should probably be running.. I do not know about your particular car but some times the secon fan only comes on with A/C use or extream heat.

Car not overheating but water steaming out after only a few blocks. i also have no leaks. changed the thermostat. water literally is boiling can hear it inside while driving. whats the issue? PLEASE!!!!!!


Not to scare you but it could be something as bad as a cracked head or head gasket allowing combustion gases to enter the cooling system. The best way to tell is with a combustion gas leak detector. They look like a dual chamber turkey baster with a colored fluid in one chamber. You remove the radiator cap and fit the rubber cork-like portion of the tester into the neck of the radiatior and take a sample of the air in the radiator. The fluid in the tester will change color by a chemical reaction if there are combustion gases in the cooling system.

Hello: You need to check your thermostat, radiator for proper flow (radiator shop can flow check your radiator) Also if it overheats in traffic your cooling fan(s) may not be coming on. If you have air conditioning that is working start the engine turn the A/C on. Open the hood, the cooling fans should be running. You also may try flushing the radiator. Follow the directions for the flush procedure on the container. If the radiator has crud it may be cheaper to replace the radiator than repair.

If the water pump and thermostat have been replaced and the system has been properly refilled and bled , the only thing left is the radiator. If coolant is not flowing through it properly , vehicle will run hot. If your car has overheated to the point of boiling over , your new thermostat may now be damaged again.. As for the fans , they only come on when the coolant reaches a certain temprature. Under normal driving conditions , they would not need to come on while the vehicle is moving , as the air flow from driving down the road would be enough to cool the engine.

It could be the fan temp. switch but it shouldn't have been boiling in the overflow tank. I'd recommend doing a compression test to see if you have a blown head gasket. If it's a blown head gasket, the compressed air/fuel mix being force into the cooling system could well look like boiling in the over flow tank.

I've had problems with Datsun (later Nissan) engines hanging the closed thermostat until it boiled, then the thermostat released and operated normally. If you increase the small vent hole in the thermostat valve plate a small amount, the problem disappears. It seems that steam from engine operation gathers behind the thermostat sensing bulb and delays opening. The increase in vent hole size lets the steam through and allows the hot water to open the valve. Hope this helps!

Overheating,reserve coolant tank boiling I have a 2000 Ford Taurus with the similar problem. I had my water pump replaced then this started.

To solve the problem you have the things to do in this order;

) When the engine is cold top off the radiator with fluid. (When the pump was replaced the fluid should have been also)
) Make sure the radiator fluid has anti-freeze in it. This is also anti boil also !
) Add fluid to the overflow reservoir.
) Make sure the drive belt was replaced on the water pump.
) With the engine running, you can add fluid to the radiator for the first minute or so. You want to get air pockets out.
) Replace radiator cap.
) Let car warm up. When it's hot you should get the radiator fan coming on.
) When it get hotter the air-conditioning fan may come on.
) If the fan does not come on, the heat sensor is probably bad.
) If all fans come on, and it overheats, you may have a bad thermostat. Trace the upper radiator hose to where it connects to the engine. That's where it located.

Do not operate the engine when it overheats, You will damage the head gaskets and cause radiator fluid to leak into the cylinders.
If you smell radiator fluid in the exhaust fumes, it may already be leaking.

Engine is over heating and blowing air into coolant resivor and boiling coolant


The blowing of air into the coolant resevour is caused by a leaking head gasket. What's happening is the cylinder is blowing air into the cooling system causing this to happen.
