This problem is caused by a defective fuel tank switching valve, it is located just aft of the drivers seat on the inside of the frame rail under the truck, has lots of fuel lines going to it.

I have a 1995 Ford F-150 with a 300 six, it has a full ffront tank and runs like it's running out of gas, I switch it to the rear tank, it runs fine. How do I fix it?

You probably have a bad fuel pump in the front tank. There are other possibilities as well. I have replaced tank switches for this reason also. You need to check for power and ground at the front tank when the switch is in the front tank position and the ignition switch is turned on.

At the wiring connector that goes up to the tank, (on the frame rail next to the tank) the power wire is the RED wire and the ground wire is the ORANGE wire. (The other wires are for your fuel gauge.)

The fuel pump relay will supply voltage to the RED wire for only about 2 or 3 seconds (to prime the fuel rail) when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, so you will need a helper to check this.

If there is no power, then you should suspect the switch. However, check for power at the switch to verify that it is the switch and not a broken wire between the switch and the tank connector.

If power and ground are both present at the tank connector, replace the front fuel pump.

I have no gas running to the engine from the front tank, and apparently have gas filling into the front tank from the rear tank. I can only use the rear tank. The switch is set for the rear tank and when I...

Hi:
I have had the exact problem on my ford truck, and fixed it. There is a tank feed shuttle valve mounted to the drivers side frame rail that is the most likely suspect. It operates by fuel pressure and when it fails, it fails so the front tank doesnt work.

It is worth mentioning that there are three fuel pumps on your truck, each fuel tank has a small low pressure pump inside the tank, and there is a high pressure pump located on the drivers side frame rail too, just before the fuel filter.

The front in the tank pump could be bad, too, but most likely the shuttle valve is the problem.

Can't use front tank. i fill the rear tank, front tank eventually fills up. switch to front tank, it'll run for about 5 minutes then stall. then i switch to rear...fine. why is the front tank filling up...

Ok sounds like a electrical problem being an 89 its fuel injected eather 5.0 or 5.8 each tank has its own fuel pump and sending unit a dashboard switch, relay, fuse and switching motor. check your fuel line from the front tank it could be clogged. check for 12v pwr. to the front pump the sending unit will require 4V but not much. as soon as the fuel rail pressureizes the ECM shuts the pump off using the relay. Usually the tank switch goes bad first.

I can't get the fuel to the engine from rear tank only

Does this have three fuel pumps? One in each tank and one on the frame rail. I know it at least has one in each tank. It doesn't have an electric switch valve. It has a mechanical one that makes sure the fuel returns to the right tank. When you flip the tank switch the power switches to the pump in the other tank.

Front fuel tank will not work

You have duel tanks with a fuel pump in each tank. You also have a fuel pump on the frame rail after the "tank selector". This device only holds a fuel filter that protects the main fuel pump. When you select front or rear tank on the dash, you are selecting which in tank fuel pump will operate. You can check the in tank fuel pump by listening for it to "humm" when the key is turned on..The in tank pumps only feed the main pump and cannot run the engine on their own. Hope this helps

When I switch from my front fuel tank to my rear tank gas stops

There is no selector valve on a 1995 ford f150 300 engine. The selector switch on the dash sends power to the pump in the selected tank. The pump then sends fuel to the engine. If engine won't run on the selected switch, the pump in that tank needs replaced.
