Question about Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

My 1997 Nissan Maxima is giving me the blues...today while driving the brake and battery light came on. While trying to get to my destination the car started getting more and more sluggish then the Airbag light came on. I got to my destination and the car would no longer start. I got a jump (to try to drive to the mechanic) and it started right up. I drove for less than a mile and it started stalling out and died. Pushed it to safety, and got another jump start and this time it wouldn't even idle for more than a few minutes. In the past 60 days I have replaced the battery, starter, and brakes. What on earth could be going on? Help!

You are going to need to have the alternator tested, I am sure it is defective, the battery is not being charged by the alternator, this causes the battery voltage to run low and that triggers all the waring lights u are getting, the battery voltage at the battery cables at idle with a good alternator should be at least 13.5 volts, the battery light doesn't mean there is a problem with the battery, it means the battery is not being charged by the alternator, do u understand this, allot of confusion on the Battery light with many people, if u still don't get this call me at home, I am In the USA 925-459-0579

John, According to Nissan forums weak failing alternator is the common problem for bat and brk light on. If you are sure battery and alternator are good, I say check and clean battery connections and all grounds(loosen and re tighten all ground connections to give good contact), check belt for being loose.
Check the attached links,

John, I think I may have already answered this one.Check and clean battery connections and all grounds(loosen and re tighten all ground connections to give good contact), check belt for being loose. Nissan forums say it is a bad alternator.

How do i fix a 1997 nissan maxima taillights. i have no tell lights and not the fuse?

If you have no lights period I would check the wiring. If it's not the fuses (Under hood and inside). Just the brake lights check the brake switch under brake pedal.
Some Nissan's have a unit between the wiring that goes out. Trace the wires from the tail lights It would be in the trunk. Small black box.
Also check Maxima.org someone on there has the answer. ;Good luck.

yes, a sticking brake caliper or the rubber brake line will cause it to pull when you let off the gas. I suggest replacing both calipers, brake lines and pads. That should cure the problem.

Brake light on nissan maxima 1997

First check your brake fluid. It may be low. If its low, have your brakes checked, they may be worn out and you may need brakes. If the master cylinder is tottaly empty, than you may have a leak. Here is a quick test for the E-brake switch. Look at the "brake light" while its on and pul on the e-brake while you are holding the release button in the handle. Pump the e-brake lever repeadetly and observe the "brake light" if it gets brighter and dimmes as you are pumping the e-brake lever., than the swithc is OK and you have a low brake fluid level. Hope this helps. let me know what you find.

Sounds as if you need the electrical portion of the ignition switch. The contacts inside are most likely worn out.

That was happening to my 97 GLE as well. I wound up having to replace the alternator. Good thing I did my mechanic said it could have gone up in flames if I'd waited. I'd ask a knowlegdable mechanic or dealer first, it was $200+.
