Alarm module may be faulty. Or your keyfob is out of sync with the Beetle. Disconnect the battery from the beetle, and wear ear muffs when you do or ear plugs as the horn is likely to go off. Remove battery from key fob and let both sit for 20 minurtes. Then put the batteries back in /connected- this should get both back into synchronization. If they do not resynchronize, the alarm module is suspect.

I have a 2005 volkswagen beetle that needs a new battery. I've read on one site where a memory keeper is needed to be installed in the AC outlet before the old battery is removed. Is this necessary? Thanks...

It's only necessary if you don't have radio code handy. If you have radio code, then go for it. If not, get memory adapter for anytime you disconnect battery. NOTE: if you don't have radio code, be prepared to go to dealer w/ VIN # to get code.

Remove the 13 mm bolt hold at the bottom side of the battery.
Take the splash shield off, and pull out the bolt, you can use a magnet to catch the mount and bolt when it comes loose.
You will find another bolt holding the power steering reservoir, take it out. then after pull it out , this won't be easy.
After replacing the battery the radio will go into safe mode and you will have to retrieve the radio code, and also reset the windows' one touch up and down programming.
