Hi,
Common problem on replacement pumps. The sending units on remanufactured pumps are made of mostly plastic components pressed together with a brass bushing or step pin. Sometimes they do not fit together snugly enough to work correctly all the time. This slop in the mechanism causes the resistance values sent by the rheostat to be erratic, sometimes fluctuating wildly or only working correctly in a certain range. (say above a half tank or below a half tank....rather annoying.) The only cure is to remove the pump and either repair the assembly for a snug fit (not for the average home mechanic) or take the malfunctioning pump assembly back to the auto parts store for warranty replacement with a hopefully correctly working unit.......sorry, no easy fix. Aftermarket pumps are very hit -miss. I have had several do this exact thing.
Please rate this answer......Thanks, Mike
Somethingin the system is worn, loose or or out of alignment, you will have to remove the door trim and watch the window while it is operating and correct any fault you see or replace worn parts/
I had the same problem with my 1990 2.5 Syncro. By chance I discovered that the HT lead from the coil to the distributer was arcing onto the body, causing 'background' charge(?). Replaced the lead and every back to normal...
