Question about Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

Just bought a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire from a private owner. Had no problems up until today. Had a bad thunderstorm today and happened to be parked in the vehicle listening to music on the radio. Suddenly the radio volume just stopped. I suspected it to be the battery and tried starting the car up but nothing. Being confused, I started checking the lights which worked and the radio light which worked as well. So it obviously is not the battery, why doesn't it start then. Is it the starter all of a sudden which never gave me a problem, or is it just Pontiac's like other vehicles that won't start when it rains??

Check the connections at the battery, clean them where they shine, electrolite will form when you just have the radio on,and then there is no connection,or not enough for the starter to start the vehicle, corrosion will act as an insulator, and the starter needs more amps, and volts to start than lights ,or radio, check the battery also.

I have a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire I don't know how much antifreeze put in it they say you can't add water to it so how many gallons of antifreeze do I put in it thank you in advance

If the system is empty, it will usually hold about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 gallons of liquid. You can add water, but you want to make sure it is distilled water. you do not want to use tap water as the minerals will clog up your system causing more expensive future repairs. But you also do not want straight water as the boiling and freezing points are not optimal. Your best bet is to use premixed universal coolant.

I have 2003 Pontiac sunfire it is stuck in park-is there a reset button---there have been no fluid leaks

Usually the problem is the brake switch or the shift lock solenoid. You may be able to take the shifter out of park by trying it before you turn the key to the on position.
Check your owners manual to see if there is an emergency release.

I recently purchased a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire (about 6 weeks ago) and have had to put coolant into it twice now. Within 2-3 weeks it is completely empty and the temp gauge gets hot and today the "check...

Have it checked by a mechanic it may be a bad head gasket OR a leak you are not aware of.

You may see white smoke out of the tail pipe that smells sweet, this means bad head gasket.

expensive to fix.

It is a dealership you bought it from. Deffiniatly look up lemon laws for your state! They are alot harder on dealerships then private citizens.

You did not say if your service engine light comes on or not, If that don't come on its hard to pinpoint the problem as it sounds electrical. And whatever i tell you would only be a guess. need more info to help.
