Question about 1998 Chevrolet Astro

3 Answers

I have a '98 Astro van that starts fine when cold but is hard to start win hot. It idle and runs fine. After it cools down completely, it will start OK. I was told it could be a fuel pressure problem and was told to change the fuel filter which did not make any difference. What's next?

I need to add that it idle and runs fine hot or cold it is just hard to start when hot. I ran the OBD scanner and monitored the coolant temperature sensor, it tracks the temp within 2 degrees of the actual temperature. I still need help!

I agree, replace the Coolant temp sensor, it will have 2 wires going to it, Not 1. Usually located just behind the breather near the thermostat outlet.

This sensor controlles your timing and fuel to air ratio.

I agree with coatsbrian, change out the Electronic coolant sensor. My brother had the exact problem. But, we also did another activity. We sprayed electronic component clearner into the key switch to flush out all the key shaving build over the years. Reason was, we cranked the car when cold and had to turn it immediately off. We then noticed the hot start problem but the engine was not hot. We sprayed the key ignition switch to flush out the metallic shavings causing intermittent shorts for the fuel pump. hope it works for you.

The EGR valve is close when the engine is closed and slowly opens upon the rising temperature of the engine. If it does not open the car will run bad and stall out
It can be the EGR valve, EGR relay or EGR solenoid

Skmet, Have you had a full tune up lately, including an injector cleaning. Problem could be a misfire, have a good Tech scan for codes, diagnose and estimate repair. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

2000 astro van hard to start when engine is warm

You will need to figure out if it is lacking fuel pressure or spark to the plugs when it fails to start. The problem could be a relay, coil, or several other electrical problems.
Usually, if the engine is hot when the problem occurs, and letting it cool down will allow it to start again, the cause is electrical.

Rough idle 95 astro van, I did a full tune up , plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, and fuel filter and cleaned egr vavle.

I actually had to replace my EGR valve and the gasket. I clean the valve well and reused both. I don't think the gasket sealed well enough though. So I went ahead and got a new valve, gasket and changed them. It runs a lot smoother now.
