Question about 2002 Ford Taurus

4 Answers

I am trying to replace a starter on a 2002 ford taurus. I have taken off the three wires connected to it and two bolts, one above and one below, connecting the starter to the car. It will not budge and I do not see where else it bolts on to.

I was mistaken,it has only two bolts, but there is a dowell there you can see in the picture, make sure there is not a brace on the rear of the starter some of them do,if it does not,I would beat it silly with a rubber malot

  • ctbny May 28, 2010

Thank you! Turns out I had removed a bolt that had nothing to do with the starter. I finally found the second bolt that needed to be removed and the stater came right out! That picture was helpful, thank you!

There are 3 bolts on these starters. Look on the other side of the solenoid and that is where the other bolt is located.

Do you have a drawing showing the location of the three bolts. I found one bolt from above and one bolt from below and I cannot find the third bolt!

Hi,

The starter is located on the back side of the motor. It bolts to the transaxle. It is quite difficult to do on the ground. You have the DOHC Zetec engine.Disconnect the battery. You will have to remove the air box assy to gain access to two of the bolts on the starter. The third bolt is on the side of the starter, and accessed from beneath. The starter then drops out.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Where is the air box assembly and how do I remove that?

  • ctbny May 28, 2010

    Also, that describes a
DOHC Zetec engine. I don't think that is the engine that I have.

    Thanks for your response!!

The stock air cleaner assembly on a Ford Focus is designed to take in
air from the outside of the car and pass it through the filter, then
send it on to the throttle body. If you want to improve the performance
of your engine by adding a cold-air intake, the stock air cleaner
assembly is the first thing to go.

Step 1 Pop the hood and locate the battery box in the lower right-hand side of the engine bay. Pull off the plastic cover with your hands. Unbolt the negative terminal from the battery using an open-end wrench, then unbolt the positive terminal.
Step 2 Unscrew the hose clamp that secures the intake tubing to the air cleaner assembly using the flat head screwdriver. Pull the intake tubing away from the assembly. If you need extra clearance, unplug the mass air flow sensor harness using your hands.
Step 3 Unclip the top half of the air cleaner assembly using your hands and set it to the side. Remove the air filter at this time as well.
Step 4 Grip the bottom of the air box with both hands and lift it up firmly. It's held in place with rubber grommets that may not pull free immediately. If necessary, pull the box towards one side of the car, then the other, working the grommets out of the car.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

    Thanks for your response!!

DOHC stands for Double Overhead Camshaft. Now there are 2 camshafts per
header. So in an inline there are 2 camshafts because there is only one
header, but there is 4 in a V-type or flat engine. These DOHC engines
usually have 4 valves. One camshaft for the exhaust valves and the other
    for the intake valves.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

How would I know if my taurus has DOHC. Is it written on the car somewhere? Because there were different part numbers for starters based on whether I have DOHC or not.

    Thanks for your response!!

When you look down at the top if the spark plug wires go to the center
with a bump on both sides that is DOHC. also the eighth digit of the VIN
    # is the engine code.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

Hi! THe size of the starter same as new one? One reason that you cant see the bolts is either the new starter is small or big. If its the same just try to re insert it again, it will really require patience. Hope this helps and have a good one!

There are three bolts that hold it on. PLus the wiring. The triangle above the door panel pops loose, behind the mirror bracket. Be careful, it has a tab that goes down behind the door panel. Pop it loose, you can pull it down far enough to access the 10mm nuts.

How to remove a starter in 1987 ford taurus?

Underneath the car, for a front wheel drive, it will be toward the front of the engine a long cylinder shaped part with another cylinder with wires going onto it. take the wires off first, paying close attention to their placement, then you remove the mounting bolts and pull it out, it's that easy dude, you can also find a video on how to do it on youtube.

How do i take the starter off and out new on

Place car on ramps or on jack stands so front end is up. Disconnect battery - negative side first. From under car, remove wires on starter (starter will be on front side of engine at transmission) then remove bolts holding starter to block. To remove it you'll have to rotate and twist it a bit to get it out. Clean all mounting surfaces. Clean bolt threads. Clean all wiring connectors. Reverse procedure to install new starter. Clean battery cable connectors and battery posts. Connect positive side of battery first, then negative. Crank it up and drive on...

Can't find the starter in a dodge spirit 1989

Taken from Haynes repair manual. I used these instructions myself to replace starter motor on my 1989 Dodge Spirit after nearly going berserk at three attempts to remove it without wanting to look it up in book.
1)Detach the negative battery terminal. 2) Working from above the engine, remove upper mounting bolt and nut to starter. (Access is accomplished this way: stand on driver-side fender and look down at brake fluid reservoir. Just below and beyond the brake reservoir you will see a vent hose. Disconnect hose & remove. Now you will see the starter motor from above view. You will be able to see a mounting bolt and a nut connecting starter to engine just above the starter (facing brake reservoir). Remove (1) bolt & (1) nut first, then raise vehicle and suport on jackstands. Then go underneath the vehicle and remove the remaining lower mounting bolt (1) on the starter. Label wires then detach them from starter. Now you can remove the starter. If you find it a tight squeeze, you may want to remove or swing the transaxle on that side for additional access, although that is not mentioned in manual (but I did it). It just gives you more room, but does not seem absolutely necessary. 3) Installation is reverse of removal.
    please do rate the solution.
    thank you for using fixya.
