You have a check valve,in a vacuum hose ,that is bad or a vacuum line that is sucked together,or has a hole in it under the hood, there might be a vacuum reservoir that may have a hole in it,it holds vacuum for the ac heat control doors, look under the hood.

How do I figure out what type of refrigerant I need for the ac?

The car originally had R12. If it has not been converted to R134 you would need to have it serviced by a pro or have someone convert it to R134. The R134 fill kit will not fit the R12 fittings.

R134a refrigerant

There is a very good chance your ac system was originally charged with R12 freon. If it was, someone will need to convert it to R134. That may require changing the receiver drier and some gaskets along with the adapter fittings for freon gauges.

Code f48 on cadillac sedan deville

F48= "Very Low A/C Refrigerant Pressure Condition" In short your AC has a leak and is low on charge. This is an R12 type refrigerant system most likely so if you haven't converted it to R134 you may have to do that.

Trying to locate where low side is on ac so can recarge ac and what tipe ac is 134r old tipe

  • The Freon that a 1992 Taurus uses is R-12. You can't recharge this system because R-12 is available only to licensed technicians and is quite regulated. The adapters used to check an R134 system and an R-12 system are very different in size. You cannot check an R-12 Ac system with R134 gauges. You will have to take your 92 Ford Taurus to a shop and have them charge your R-12 AC system. No way around this.
  • I think the R-12 is far cooler in temperature so I kept the R-12 in my 92 Taurus. I never converted it to R134.
  • As for where the HI and LOW side are you did not list the engine size but if you go to the AC compressor and follow the lines around the engine bay you will quickly locate them. One should be on the left side by the firewall and the other will be on the left side towards the front.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tonu

1989 Chev PU , Aircon Dead , Want to Convert

Anyone can convert R12 to R134. It is as simple as screwing the two adapters on the low side and high side charging ports. Now to charge it you need to evacuate it as you said and then charge the system with R134. The hardest part is finding the way to evacuate and then recharge the system without going to a repair facility.

Charging issues

Recommend istall dye into system, charge with just enough r134-A (cheapest at walmart.then let ac run for 30 min. after that inspect with black light for a green substance at all ac components.if none found look at ac drain for green residue.Best way to isolate ac leaks.

AC does not work

Check the fuse for the A/C and try refilling the A/C with R134. You can buy the re charge kit at Auto Zone or Wal Mart, almost any Auto parts store. If the system is low on R134 the A/C compressor will not activate to keep it from burning out.
Try checking the fuse first then re charge the system with a can 12oz of R134. Just keep in mind not to over charge the system. Just follow the instruction and you'll be fine.
Keep me posted, be glad to help out.
