Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf

2 Answers

1997 VW Golf...airbag light on...fault codes read by dealer reported faulty clock spring. New clock spring installed. Light now goes out for 5 seconds but then comes back on. Don't have a scanner to read codes but it appears that the 'faulty clock spring' code has not cleared itself. Question - can the codes be cleared without having to return to the dealer and paying for another scan check? Have tried battery terminal off but no result

Thanks Boneebone....haven't had the codes cleared...was hoping to avoid the cost but sounds like there's no option. With other vehicles I've had, the warning light will go out once the fault is fixed and the code just stays in the ECM memory and can be deleted at a later date but obviously this is not the case with the VW. Thanks again - appreciated.

Did you have the code cleared after you installed the new part because the ECM cannot clear itself, even though you installed a new part and the code is still in the system? You need to have the code erased with a OBD II scanner.

Unfortunately all 1996 and newer cars are equipped with OBD II computers and they codes need to be erased from the memory be a OBD II scanner. The cars before 1996 had OBD I computers which you could erase the code by disconnecting the battery for 15 min.

You can go to your local AutoZone store and they will read and clear the computer for you at no charge. You can also buy a basic OBD II scanner for about $50 dollars that will read and erase codes, they will work on all 1996 and newer cars. it pays for itself the first time you have another problem.

You must have the VW dealer scan the SRS system for fault codes and diagnose those codes before any type of repairs are attempted.

how did you manage to read any code like this i wonder as i cannot on a europeon model ,i always end up taking them to the dealer to have any thing done like this ,or remove the bulb warning light wires and then connect a diesel heater relay so the bulb goes out when it goes for its yearly mechanical inspection .Even had to scrap good cars because of this fault and the cost of putting it right ,well come on we all know about dealers and their prices

Good Morning - I did a emergency stop in my Golf GTI and the airbag fault light has appeared will I need to take my car to VW to be reset?

Anyplace can access the VW airbag code a reset might not do it. The reason for the light to come on is not beacuse you made a emergency stop. The light is warning you that a fault has been detected and if involved in a accident the air bag may not deploy or may deploy so theyll have find the code to see what has set it off.

Installed new rack ,have air bag light on

The steering wheel needs to be prevented from rotating when it is disconnected from the steering linkage. The airbag system uses a rotational sensor that is just below the steering wheel mounted airbag. (Often called a clock-spring)
I suspect is was damaged during your repair.
The airbag fault codes need to be read to confirm.
Good luck.

When the airbag light is on it means a fault has occurred in the system and the airbag diagnostic monitor has disabled the system, the most common problem that turns the light on is a break in the connection to the steering wheel mounted airbag, this is due to a rotating ribbon contact that breaks under the steering wheel that connects the airbag to the wiring harness and the diagnostic monitor, the part is called th clock spring contact, a coiled up ribbon electrical contact that turns with the wheel

Airbag light remains on after changing fuse of rear wiper.VW POLO

This is a common occurance in vw's.
In order to turn off the airbag light you need to have a scan tool hooked up to your car because the airbag detected a fault of some sort, or it could be a faulty component in the airbag system itself.

1997 Caravan Airbag like comes on intermittently.

ok, if the airbag light is on, there is a fault with the unit, your concerns are valid, if it has a faulty sensor the airbag MAY fire for no reason or not fire when you actually need it. if it has a recall on it, take it to the dealer so they can rectify the fault.

Hi i had a similar problem with a peugeot 607 it turned out to be a faulty brake light switch that was sometimes not working and so confusing the asr system. It also left no fault code but did activate the asr warning lamp when it was faulty. try checking the brake light switch for an intermittent fault. Hope this helps
