Question about 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

My 1998 cavalier 2.2 standard, starts, runs for a couple seconds then the fuel shuts off. we have NO anti-theft lights lit on dash, and none of the tricks for resetting antitheft work (ie: leaving key on 'on' for 10 minutes or doing the 3 cycles of ten minutes with key in 'on' position, etc). car won't start again until it is ready to - sometimes half an hour, sometimes days or a week. please help! dealer has replaced pcm, ignition cylinder and instrument cluster and nothing has made any difference, other than I am out over $1300 already.

You kidding 1300 euros ?? right try this under the bonnet their is a emergency fuel cut off switch ,its about an inch squre with a red rubber top ,push it down or by/pass it as a temp measure ,if that doesnt work then remove the sender unit and check the pump for grit in the gauze filter on teh bottom and the condition of the pipe from the pump to teh outlet ,also check the electrical connections on the sender unit ,find the feed wire to the pump and the other bigger wire which is the return ? run this to a seperate earth point even rewire it if you have to ,iam sure this work

I have a 03 cavalier it starts up then shuts back off what causes it

Hi Missy , There are a number of thing's that can cause this . Fuel system problems , ignition system problems , the PCM - powertrain control module , the PCM is the engine computer ! There are multiple sensors on this vehicle as with all cars for the 80's on . From 1996 on they have more electronic modules then before , Anti-theft systems , air bags, anti - lock brakes etc.
Does you car have any lights light on the dash ? check engine ? Security ?. When you first turn on your key the dash lights light up an after 7 seconds the lights should go out , Do they ? You should check for DTC's - diagnostic trouble codes . That means hooking your car up to a scan tool . If it starts an shuts back off right away I would think a anti-theft system problem . If the anti-theft thinks it being stolen it disables the fuel injection in some cases !

Anti theft wont let me start car

The problem may not be with anti-theft but with a bad fuel pump,cam/crank sensor etc. Also, you may try unlocking the drivers door with the key. On most cars that is the standard method for disabling the security system.

My 98 cavalier starts for one second then shuts off flashs the antitheft light

to reset anti theft system--turn key on engine off, for about 10 minutes. after 10 minutes, turn key off, wait 15 seconds, then try to start car. from 97-2005 gms have a theft system called a passlock system. you can go to tubesound.com/passlocksystem. to disable system for good.
