Question about 2002 Saturn Sl

1 Answer

My '02 Saturn SL has started running hot. I brought it to a mechanic who flushed the cooling system and chaged the thermostat, but that didn't fix it. Unlike other cars, turning the a/c on will cool the engine because it trips a fan, but it sounds like it cuts out when the car is sitting still for anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or so (e.g. at a light). It's also sounds like it's rattling when that fan is on. Is it just a question of replacing that part?

Thank you. The work done was needed, but I agree about your assessment of not fixing the problem. That's why I wanted to do more research before going back. They supposedly did a free AAA maintenance inspection, which also found that the ignition coils are arcing and need to be replaced. I figured this might be part of this larger electrical problem? Thanks for the thermostat switch info! I feel better about having this taken care of now.

From the sound of it i think you could be right ,the fan motor bearings are worn but its very difficult to advise from a description as you will appreciate.the fan should continue to run when the AC is on and as you say its cutting off then either the fan is worn or you have a connection problem in one way shape or form.the best thing is if your not sure is to replace the fan and ask change the thermostat switch which on this year of vehicle is in the radiator which with no disrespects your mechanic should have done before he released the vehicle .He should have made sure it was all working with the cooling fan cutting in when the was left engine running to test it ,

I have a 96 sl saturn. takes half an hour for my car to reach running temp. When i start driving the engine cools down so far, to the point i have no hot air for my heater. I replaced the thermastat, i...

replace the thermostant again this time get a hotter temp thermostant and buy it from the dealer, the other thing is that these cars are known for the temp sensors being bad this would give you the false reading on the gauge but would not affect the heat, if its taaking a long time then i would replace the stant and this time or before replacing the stant i want you to flush out the heater core, remove the hoses from the heatercore and use a water hose to flush water through the heater core, a plugged core will not throw heat or will start to allow water to flow when it gets good and hot to flow through the retricted core due to rust and crud, try the flush first and then try a new temp sensor if the flush helps the heat, hope this is helpful good luck.

I have changed everythimg

i had the same problem and the mechanic told me it was the fan motor. They replaced the motor and it stopped running hot unless I have to set in an idle mode. I turn on the AC and it stops running hot. The fan from the AC cools the motor. Hope this helps.

How do i unclog the radiator on a 1998 Saturn sl?

Your car's radiator and cooling system needs to be clean to be cool. As time goes on, your car's radiator builds solid deposits that can clog the cooling system. A quick, inexpensive radiator flush which can be purchased at any reputable store (Autozone, Nappa, etc.) can keep the system in shape. It's important to change your antifreeze seasonally. Before you start your radiator flush, make sure you have everything you need. There's nothing worse than draining your radiator only to realize that you need to drive to the auto store for something! Make sure to clear up clogs or you may soon clog up your thermostat, water pump causing your car to overheat and/or heater core leaving you cold in the winter.
What you'll need to perform a radiator flush:

  • Phillips head screwdriver or wrench (whichever your radiator drain requires)
  • Cloth rag
  • Radiator Flush solution
  • Coolant
  • Funnel
  • Used coolant receptacle
*Be sure to let your engine cool completely before you loosen or remove the radiator cap. Hot coolant can be painful!
I hope this helps and good luck. Please vote and leave a message.

Car runs real hot

Make sure to use OEM parts and drain the air out of the cooling system. The 3.5 especially is very touchy regarding OEM and aftermarket waterpumps and thermostats for whatever reason. Simple solution to bleed out the air is to drive the car 5-10 mins without the pressure-cap.
