Sound like you may need a new power steering pump or rack and pinion. Have you noticed any leaks from the vehicle? If you've had the vehicle for 21yrs, then I would have to go with the power steering pump is begining to fail. Hope this helps.

clear the computer on a scanner, then take the car for a ride about 40 miles driving at various road speeds from 30-50 mph, this should give the computer its drivability info that has been lost in the process from before when the pins were messing up in the ADL.

There is something out of balance or loose or the car could not shake. Take it to a front end shop where they can check the toe and camber and check for bad wheel bearing etc. Shaking at the speed usually means a tire has a bulge or out of balance. Good luck you need a second opinion. This could be dangerous too so don't take any chances.

Power Stearing

The same thing happed to my 06 cobalt. The thing is that the DUMB A** at GM made the whole power steering electrical. Your going to have to change the the little computer that is located right under the steering wheel. if you go to the dealership they are going to RIP YOU OFF. What i did was i got the part at a GM junk yard, all it cost me was $200. your going to have to take the whole steering wheel of and change it. I hope i helped. GM needs to do a recall b4 someone God forbid, dies form this in an accident.
I still do like my cobalt thought lol

Steering wheel violently shakes.

that is usually caused by bad engine mount this condition usually changes the distance of the cv joint and the differential which cause the cv joint to shake. also check your ball joints.

06 Chevy Cobalt power steering msg and check engine light on

So I fell victim just as everyone else has. I hit 45,000 miles and my power steering went out and it cost $900 to fix it.

In order to get Chevy to recall this problem we all need to call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 888-327-4236 or visit http://www.SaferCar.gov It will only take a few minutes.

I made a video and put it on youtube to help build awareness on the subject:
