Here are the common cause of surges, cold stalls, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours.
To correct this problem I want you to get a can of intake cleaner (ABOUT $5.00) from any local auto parts store like NAPA or Carquest, do not use carburetor spray, intake cleaner only or u will damage the Teflon coating inside the throttle valve and air bypass valve, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Smart car kangaroos and stops when I am trying to get out of tight car park. I may be activating the hill assist brake by holding foot brake pedal?

Hello again,

Please note that the Smart car is equipped with an auto brake system where if you remove your foot off the brake pedal , it will not disengage till you press the gas pedal , other wise you might have a problem .
Please try with out having your foot over the brake pedal and get back to us.

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

Why does my engine stop when I apply the foot brake

Check your air intake systems as they are usually an issue when it comes to braking and engine performance. If they are faulty then you probably have to replace them. Remember air intake systems can generate many problems as far as your engine performance is concerned. You can follow my AFE Performance to find out more on air intake systems and their operations..

I would say one of two things happened. first maybe the parking brake shoes need adjustment. the most common that i see all the time even with newwer cars and trucks, the rear brakes are set up two ways, the type your car uses is the disc rear brakes used to stop the car and then for the parking brake it uses shoes inside the rear of the brake rotor, inside the rotor it gets very rusty and the shoes tend to rust awat from the metal mounting braket it comes on. i see this all the time, when you go to remove the rotor as you slide the rotor off the shoes fall apart and can not go back on, as along as the rotor is not removed it will stay in place, this problem would of occured anyway it would of taken a while longer and then you would of heard noise from rear wheels but it happened sooner due to removing the rotors, its not there fault but they should of called you and told you that you would need parking brake shoes but thought that you may not use the parking brake which is a bad thought in there part. maybe its just an adjustment that need to be made to the parking brake. heres a picture of the rear shoes to show you the metal bracket the shoes come apart from. another thing is that if the rotors were replaced then that explains it more as the old rotors contain rust and build up and that helped make the parking hold bettter.lets hope it just an adjustment.johnjohn2_137.gif

If t dies hard - feeling like the trani is not disigaging when you stop - it could be a electronic part inside the trani.. This part tells the stall converter to kick in at a stop.. Not super expensive to fix.. But best done by a trani shop....
