I have a 2010 rio 5. It is missing occasionally and the tach is not reading either. What could this be?

Tach works off the crank sensor. Threw the ECU. Have the codes read. A bad crank sensor will cause misfires also. But so will the ECU.

Why won't the fan shut off and could that cause tachometer quit working?

the fan not shutting off could be a wiring problem, blown relay or an issue with the connectors. But no, it would not cause the tach to stop working. They run on completely separate systems.

My 1995 Jetta GL 2.0L has Intermittent tach problems. Sometimes tach will work normally and then it falls to zero and stays there. Then it might bounce back and forth. Also, how is the tach hooked up?

The most likely problem is that you need a new voltage regulator put in the alternator, the tach runs off of it and when the tach quits i think you will find that the car also stops charging, the brushes for the alternator are in the regulator and a new one usually fixes the problem.

Have a 2001 camry 4 cyl...tach stopped working..is there a relay or does tach need to be replaced

the tach runs off the ignition module so if the engine runs good the tach is bad
no relay is involved with a tachometer

Since my tachometer stopped working the transmission will not shift correctly. Will the tach affect the trans shift?

No it will not, but a tranny problem would cause tach not to work and tranny to slip or chug.

Tachometer stopped working completely but all other gauges are fine. Tachometer would work off and on for a few days before completely not working. "Check engine light" stays on. All fuses are fine. This...

It's very UNLIKELY the jumpstart had anything to do with it, unless you accidentally connected the battery in 'reverse polarity', which causes the electrical system voltages to 'DROP' instantaneously to near zero volts and create 'current spiking' in all active circuits. Nevertheless, the microcomp in the instrument cluster which drives the TACH has protective curcuits. The only solutions are to eliminate any problems in the wiring between the ECM/PCM and the instrument cluster, and bench test the tach to determine if it's working properly. Process of elimination - if wiring is ok and the Tach is ok, then the problem is in the ECM/PCM.

1994 f-350 7.3 turbo diesel.tach reading 0 rpm's at idle speed.

yea the 93 to 95 trucks never had a tach that works very long
and first the Tach does not make the od light blink or ck engine lgt
the crank trigger does this little thing is located right in middle front of engine between the vac pump and pwr steering pmp looks like a brass bolt with wires comming out of the back of it costs about 30 bucks (don't forget the locktite blue)
now that should fix the od lights and the ck engine but it may not fix the tach thats done in the tach driver module on back of tach in dash
you can replace this but my vote it's too expensive I did mine just fine with a after market one(50 bucks), bolted it right in front of old one, it hooks up super easy gets it's signal off the alternator stator

im sort of suprized it starts ok with a bad crank trig (eec needs to see +50 rpm to start fuel flow to injectors )

any good shop with a eec scanner can see this in just seconds

Tach,temp gauge,gas gauge intermitantly works

This problem can be tricky to solve... one thing I have run across is that some Cabrios have a factory fault that lets water leak though the firewall onto the fusebox! Needless to say this will cause any number of electrical problems due to the inevitable corrosion. The problem is fixed by inspecting under the hood directly above the fusebox (where the computer is mounted) Look for signs of debris or moisture. I have successfully repaired these with a good cleaning and the application of an asphalt based waterproofing membrane (unfortunately this was too late in some cases and neccesitated fusebox replacement!) Hope this helps... ;-)

Speedometer/tach stopped working

There are 2 sensors on the engine that sent a signal to the computor and speedometer and tach. When one of these goes bad it can make the speedometer and tach go all over the place and also just stop working. This can also cause all types of engine running problems because the information being sent to the PCM will be incorrect all so. The units are easy to replace once you find them, it seems that they are located in different areas of the engine with each year the vehicle was put out.

I have the same problem.. i installed a toggle switch for the fuse so at least I can reset it while driving.. its still a pain so Im thinking my next step will be to drill a hole through the plastic and put in a small metal post to stop the tach from going past 7

has anyone taken theirs into a shop?
