To replace the head gaskets, you have to take a lot of other parts off, and you'll need to replace any gaskets for those items. Intake manifold, valve covers, possibly timing cover (not knowing which engine you have), exhaust pipe gasket or exhaust manifold gasket, etc.

When u replace the head gaskets u must also replace any parts gasket that u remove (valve covers, intake manifold etc.) to get the heads off, they sell what is called a "Valve Grind" gasket set that is what u need, it will have all the gaskets in it u need..

Simple head gasket

No, you don't have to remove the spark plugs. That will allow it to turn easier because it cant compress in the cylinder, but not a must. As far as the rest of the removal, yes that's how it needs to be done. If you don't want to do all that work, you can ad SeaFoam. It does have good reviews, but its not the proper way to fix. Whenever you add any kind of additive, you risk causing more damage. Save yourself the future head ache and replace the head gasket. If you are confident you can just remove what you see needs to be removed, go with it. All instructions are base on a mechanics standpoint, and lets face it the more work performed the higher the payout. Just use your eyes and good judgment, You will see exactly what needs to be removed..... Good luck.

The routine gaskets are included in a "head gasket set". this would include new valve seals as well12_30_2011_6_48_15_pm.jpg

What gaskets do I need besides my head gasket when replacing the head gasket on a 2004 Ford Taurus, in otherwords what would replace while doing this job car has 168000 kms

Head bolts and head gaskets. Let's see, you will need a lower and upper intake set as well. These head gaskets usually blew because bad fan relays caused the gaskets to blow and warped the heads. Ford used cheap oil pressure switches that leaked as well.

Heavy white smoke suddenly came poring out of right side of engine....alll the coolant leaked out

Sounds like a blown head gasket. That will allow your coolant flow to enter the combustion area and burn; thus producing the white smoke. The vehicle should not be driven again until it is fixed.

Transmission

If trans is sealed, no dip stick, usually at about 65,000 - 85,000 miles, youll want to do a transflush and transpan gasket. - that way you can check your levels, add, replace, and repair alll at the same time. You can just get away with a transpan gasket, but will only flush out 30% of your old fluids.

but if your trans isnt sealed, you have to check the trans fluid with the car running and in neutral.
