Question about 1994 Mercury Tracer

1 Answer

I ran out of gas. I Added gas. When I first turn the car on I hear the fuel pump run. When the starter is engaged a light comes on which says "Fuel Cutout" and the engine turns over but doesn't try to start. I have gone to the trunk and presses the fuel cutoff reset, but it had the button down so it did nothing.

Ford was concerned about electric fuel pumps running with ruptured lines after a collision. Tracers and Escorts were equiped with sensors to detect collisions and shut off power to fuel pump. Owner's manual notes that even bumps in a parking lot might be enough to trip sensor if force was applied in appropiate direction. Reset button is located in trunk over right side wheel well. There is a small hole, insert finger and push down to reset (check the Mercury-Tracer-Owners-Manual).

Look for -smell for- RAW gasoline spraying/leaking. Check your fuel injectors if any are leaking.

If there is any fuel leaking it must be repaired prior to resetting the button in the trunk located on top of the passenger side strut tower, theres a hole, in that hole theres a button, it might need to be pulled back up if it feels as if it has already been depressed, put your finger on the side of the button and pull it up, then push it down and start the car, this will only work if the fuel leak, be it a faulty injector, a line that is leaking, etc... has been repaired Otherwise it will do no goid pressing the fuel cutoff reset switch, it will only trip the sensor again.

The fuel cut off means Fuel will not be spraying if the fuel cut off light is lit. Ignore trying to start it over and over aslong as the cutoff light is lit, it will not drain your battery. Heres some more good information to know what to look for, and where to start- if your Tracer is (Direct Injection) Fuel Injected, it will have one injector per cylinder, located on the top of the engine back side, under the intake manifold, they are in a row going left to right and angled/slanted down and forward on top of the injectors connected to them is the fuel rail, it can be removed easily, two bolts hold the entire rail and all injectors inplace, one bolt on the right and the other on the left. If your Tracer has TBI (Throttle Body Injection), it will almost look like a carburetor, but it will have 1 or 2 fuel injectors visible after removing the air filter.

Hope this helps.

There are no apparent leaks, no smell of fuel or visible fuel. I displaced the sidewall so I could see the cutout switch. the button is down and therefore cannot be pressed. I see no way of pulling the button up.

An Inertia Switch (Shut Off Fuel Pump) is a safety device that interrupts power to the fuel
pump/ cuts off fuel delivery in the case in which the car is involved in
an accident. Many cars fitted with an inertia switch experience failure
for no apparent reason. They usually have a reset button on top similar
to a reset button on a household circuit breaker. Its possible that you need think in replacement.

Unplugged or disconnected the switch; keep in mind that basically this is one ON/OFF switch:
    1) You need a basic on/off switch so that when you hold down the button
or switch, it lets current go through it and you turn the car on

    2) When you aren't holding it down or switching, the circuit is open so
you can't turn the car on

Basically, when you hold it down, it acts like just a wire. Check the wires and jump temporaly, start the vehicle, if run, this is the problem.

Try it out before hiding the switch.

There are three wires to the switch. Which ones need jumpered? Is there a schematic or wiring- diagram available?

The girlfriend was riving my 2002 xterra. she said it run out of gas it now has about three gallons of gas, all the lights work, i can hear the fuel pump engage but the starter will not. I tried unhooking...

what do you mean by the starter will not. do you mean engage turn over or does it turn over and wont start because the fuel pump and starter have nothing in common. first of all what were your codes set and second if it turns over see if you can smell full and third if it doesn't engage at all she probally ran the battery down so try charging your batt or you can put a dvom meter on it and it should read 12.6 volts full charged 12.4 3/4 12.3 50% which will not start the car so if its any thing below 12.3 charge the batt . My car ran out of gas, now it will not start

If high miles, it may be a fuel pump. Fuel pumps usually go when gasoline is low and pump gets too warm. This may mimic running out of gas when there is a gallon or two of gas still left to draw but needle reads empty. Have someone put their ear to the gas tank while you turn on the ignition switch. the pump should run for 2-10 seconds with key on and not cranking.

If you don't hear the pump run, then investigate further for a failed pump.

Car wont start

You need to be very quiet for this test, but try turning the ignition key until dash warning lights are on, but without cranking the engine. Listen for whirring noise from fuel pump in the gas tank. You may even lift out the rear seat base, to pick up any sound as best you can. If you can't hear anything from several attempts then it's likely you have a failed fuel pump. The fuel pump can sometimes suffer damage when running out of fuel.

Where is the carburetor on my 93 mercury topaz?

There isn't a carberator on your 93 mercury topaz. It is new enough to have electronic fuel injection (EFI).
When you say it wont crank, does that mean the starter wont turn the engined over? Or do you mean it wont start?
If the starter turns the engine and it wont start here's a trick that might work. Turn the ignition key to on but don't engage starter. Listen for a buzzing sound coming from underneath the vehicle near gas trank. The buzzing sound is the fuel pump pumping up pressure. The buzzing sound might last only one to two seconds. Then turn ignition key off and turn it on again NOT engaging the starter several more times. This will help prime the fuel up to the engine. After you've done this several times, the engine should start. Lt me know if I was any help.

I have a 1999 ford contour after I ran out of gas, I added 2 gal of gas and it won't start"

It is possible that when you ran out of gas air got into the fuel lines. What you will need to do is turn the key into the run position(not into the start position) and leave it for 30 - 60 seconds. This should engage the fuel pump and allow it to pressurize the system. After letting it sit try and start the engine letting it crank for 5 - 10 seconds at a time. You may need to repeat the process a few times. It is also possible that when you ran out of fuel you damaged the fuel pump and it may need replacing. When you put the key into run see if you can hear the fuel pump running. I hope this helps you out.

Car ran out of gas, never started again.

Hello , If you run a fuel injected vehical out of fuel , then you may need to purge the system of air. Locate the schrader vale( looks like a bicycle tire valve ) on your fuel rail. Remove the plastic cap by un-threading it. Push the center of the valve down , watch your face and eyes! Wipe up any fuel , the cycle the key on and off a few times and make sure you hear the fuel pump. Re-press down the schrader valve and check for pressure. It should really shoot out not dribble. Make sure the car has fuel , cycle the key again( cycle means on off on off not turning to start) car should start if there is no air in lines. Thank you , Quinn

Ran out of fuel, added ten gallons it will not

Have someone listen near that gas-tank when you turn the key to the on position and see if they can hear the hum of the fuel pump. Running out of gas is hard on the pumps.

Try cranking it a bit for there could be a little air in the line aswell.

1987 IROC, Ran out of gas,put gas in, now service engine light on

if you have high milieage you may have sucked in the gunk on the botton of your tank when you ran out of fuel check if you can hear the fuel pump running for about 2 sec with key on engine off if you hear nothing the problem is with your pump as they will burn out if they run dry for too long,if you hear the pump check for fuel pressure if pressure low check fuel filter to see if clogged by gunk from bottom of tank.
