Engine cutting out when idle

Check engine light is on, when stopped and running the engine sporadically cuts out and revs back up unless its in motion. If left idling the engine eventually cuts out. There is also a black residue developing on the battery. What do i do to fix it?

Since your CEL (Check Engine Light) is on you will first of all need to have the ECM trouble code read by a OBD II scanner to determine the exact cause of the problem first before throwing any money and parts at it.

If you can drive it to your local AutoZone the can usually read your codes with a scanner for no charge.

The black residue on your battery could be just corrosion on the battery terminals. Open up a can of Coke and pour it on the battery, the Coke will eat the acid.

My car sounds like it wants to cut out!

sounds like your idle is set too low , check your rpm at idle (warm) , and up your revs at idle.3_30_2012_5_08_46_pm.jpg

WhenI push the gas pedal to accelerate the engine cuts out and the cars jumps almost the way a rev limiter cuts out the engine, but the longer the car runs the worse the idling gets until the engine cuts...

The first thing I would check is the engine coolant temperture sensor. Check for codes. Check the air and fuel filters. All of these will cause your symptoms. Let me know and we can go from there

ask a, local mechanic to have a look ,i suspect the idle motor but it could be the throttle sosition sensor under the dash ,its a renault so its impossible to read any diagnostic codes unless its an american market vehicle

Engine idles perfectly and revs fine while in park. Under load the engine cuts out hard while accelerating at about 2000 rpm. Recently has had new throttle body, checked vac lines and actuator on air...

ur having fuel supply or poor electrical supply problem thats why the engine cuts off underload/ check spark plugs or airflow meter condition as well....

When in park honda odyssey revs up and down between 1000 and 2000 RPMs

is the check engine light on also? it sounds like the idle air control valve is bad. this controls the idle of the vehicle. when it is stuck open it causes too much air into the engine and causes it to rev. when it gets to a set rpm, the pcm cuts fuel. then it turns the fuel back on, then the engine revs, then it cuts fuel........code p0505 will prob be set

Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

check the distributor to make sure that the rotor is pointing at the no. 1 cylinder when that cylinder is at top dead center on the compression stroke. It sounds like your distributor rotor is 180 degrees out of time. The engine will run but will do what yours is doing.
