Question about 1995 Jaguar XJ-R

Intermittent shut down of Jaguar XJR while running

Hello, I have a 1995 XJR 4.0 liter with 160,000 km on the clock. The car runs great most of the time.... Every once in a while it will just start to idle rough and then shuts down. this happens while I'm driving but most of the time when I am stopped at a traffic signal and am pulling away. I get an immediate battery light and nothing else. 90% of the time the car will restart right away and I can drive off normally. The other 10% of the time I have to wait 20 minutes or so and restart the car. My local Jag mechanic has replaced both O2 sensors and the crankshaft position sensor as this was documented somewhere as causing similar problems. I love the car as it is my daily driver but the reliability thing is starting to wear me down...

Hello Joe, in regards to your advice on changing out the high tension coil you mention, each of the six spark plugs has it's own coil pack, so are you recommending that all the packs need to be changed or is there something I'm not following here ? I would have thought that if one or more of the individual coil packs was acting up I would be getting a miss fire ??
    Cheers, Jeff

The fault is intermittent - strikes without warning - and I guess if there are no error codes - so the fault is beyond the reach of the computer sensors - change your high tension coil.

Ahhh the AJ16s, Eaton M90 blower with coil-on-plug, distributorless ignition, Sorry for my previous 'solution' I was not thinking too much about the specifics but more the nature of the problem. Some of the Merc 6s in the mid nineties had coil on plug but actually shared two plugs per coil. OK what I mentioned before about the coil comes from experience of the kind of 'sudden death' engine shut down you describe. There is no misfire, more a case of no fire. I would examine the common low tension wiring upstream of the coils for any weak connections or breaks. Next the crank speed sensor - check the connection for corrosion and or dirt, sometimes if the output if interrupted or low the ECU fails to track the engine speed. If that happens when the engine comes to idle the air/throttle control does not to compensate and the engine then stalls by being given too lean a mix. On the fuel side I wonder if a faulty fuel pressure regulator might just be worth looking for. Sometimes a leaky regulator can dribble fuel and enriches the intake mix to the extent it can't fire.

As most likely know the engine in your Jag is controlled by a computer, when it senses a serious fault in any of the systems it monitors it can trigger a shut down with a restart, the shut down and needed restart is the same as rebooting a computer for a problem that has occurred in the system. What must be done now is to have the local dealer or a very well equipped shop run a scan of the computers memory, there will be fault codes stored for they event and warning lights. So get it tested.

Does check engine light or wrench light come on? If yes, get free computer scan from Autozone or other parts store that offers free scan. Sounds like a sensor is failing

My 2004 Jaguar XJR heats up spiratically. One day

First suspect would be cooling fan controller. Big silver unit close to main fans. To check correct fan operation, leave it idling for a while, (best to do this test after it has had a run) and fully warm, then check both fans run up - they should go really hard after a while, the air flow will gradually increase to try to maintain a constant temperature. If they just run at a single speed, suspect controller, if only one runs, then the other fan or controller has failed (put multimeter across fan terminals to see which it is). Another possibility would be air lock in cooling system, these models are not prone to this, but it is a possibility, undo water pressure cap and make sure you fill until water is spilling down overflow tube, keep going for another pint or so, quickly put the cap on whilst water is still flowing down the tube. There is a second container at the front where excess coolant is dumped and returned when cold. If this is not primed, you can sometimes get a small vapour lock which can cause problems. Less likely is thermostat, these tend to fail in a predictable way, but thought I should mention it if all else fails.

Oil pressure light comes on intermittently, often after getting up to normal operating temp. Goes off when engine revs. No knocking, runs fine, oil changed...still comes on. 160,000 miles.

try running a higher viscosity oil.
Instead of 5w30 (W stands for winter or cold viscosity) try a 10W30 or maybe more like a 20W50 the higher number is when the oil heats up.
You may try and add a can of No-Smoke or STP oil additive since you recently changed oil.

Jaguar 1995 XJ6 idle doesn't hold

I had this problem with my wifes car. I went through the car top to toe and found more than one problem causing this intermittant issue.
I found a weak crank sensor, when warm it was intermittantly losing a signal, replaced it and the problem was a little better, I then found that the throttle position sensor was also intermittantly not within the range it should be, replaced it and it helped, I then was getting the oxygen sensor code and that was only due to the car stalling, nothing to do with the o2's, I finally traced the final issue to the integral harness on the valve body inside the transmission, I replaced that harness and fitted a new transmission speed sensor and the car has been perfect.
I know you have several issues here that could be your problem but you now have a base to start from.
Last thing is the car may just need an engine set-up if you are no longer having any codes. This is only done by the dealer using there WDS computer system. The perform a oxygen sensor orientation test, they set-up the kick down and also set-up the Throttle positon sensor (TPS).
Hope this helps.
