All Toyota vehicles with electronic fuel injection utilize the Toyota EFI or TCCS engine management system. This system incorporates many features to enhance performance, emissions, and drivability. One feature is the Self Diagnostic System. The self diagnostic system monitors engine operations and when a particular sensor or input varies out of specified operating parmeters, the "Check Engine" will be illuminated.
READING THE TROUBLE CODES
Reading the diagnostic trouble codes is very easy. You will need a paper clip or auto wire to short the check connectors of the diagnostic connector. The diagnostic connector comes in two types. The early system is located on the inner-left fender well and is a round, green connector, usually located near the air cleaner. Simply jump the two terminals in this connector with the ignition switch in the "ON" position and the engine off. Later models, '87 and newer use a multiple terminal "DIAGNOSTIC" connector which is a small, rectangular-shaped grey "box", usually located near the right fender in the enigne compartment. To get codes out of this type of connector, jump the "TE1" and "E1" teminals. Finding these terminals is easy as the inside cover of the diagnostic connector contains a schematic of the connector pinouts. If the underhood emission decal (VECI) is still intact on your vehicle, the proper pins for this are outlined there as well.
The trouble codes will appear as flashes of the check engine lamp. Be sure the ignition key is on, the engine off, and your foot off of the accelerator when reading the codes. Two different codes may appear: One-digit and two digit. One digit codes have an approximate 4.5 second delay between flashes with the check engine light illuminating for about a half of a second. Mulitiple codes have a 2.5 second delay between them. For example a code two flashes the check engine lamp two times in a little over one second: I I. If two codes are stored, such as a code two and a code four, the lamp may flash as such: ....I I....I I I I. Crude examples but you get the idea. Two digit codes are similar but will flash the lamp with the first number first and the second number last. An example of a code twleve is I ....II and a code twenty four is I I..IIII.

DIAGNOSTIC CODESDiagnosis codes are held in memory and may be displayed by grounding the proper terminals at the diagnostic connector or check connector. The system should be interrogated for stored codes before any disconnection of the battery cables; once disconnected, the stored codes will be lost. Certain conditions must be met before the codes will be transmitted from the ECU. The initial conditions are:


Engine at normal operating temperature Battery voltage 11 volts or above Throttle fully closed (IDL points engaged) Transmission in N All accessories and electrical loads OFF
If any of the initial conditions are not met, the ECU will note a problem and display a switch condition code when the diagnostic circuit is grounded.
Diagnostic Connector Locations
See Figure 1
On all equipped vehicles the check connector (near the ignition coil) or diagnostic connector are located under the hood in the engine area on the shock tower (passenger side) or near the junction or relay block (driver's side). A small plastic cap covers the check connector terminals and hinged plastic cap covers the diagnostic connector. Each terminal is mark inside the diagnostic cap cover for proper identification.

Reading Stored Codes

  1. Check that the initial conditions are met.
  2. Turn the ignition switch ON but do not start the engine.
  3. At the diagnostic connector or check connector, use a jumper wire to connect terminals T and E 1 .
  4. Observe the CHECK ENGINE warning lamp on the dashboard; read the code(s) based on the number and rate of flashes.
  5. If the system is operating normally, with no codes stored, the warning lamp will flash on/off in a constant, unchanging pattern. This is the System Normal signal; the ECU is acknowledging the request for codes but has nothing to report.
  6. If malfunction codes are stored, the light will blink every 1 / 2 -second. The first number of blinks will indicate the first digit of a 2-digit code. After a 1 1 / 2 second pause, the second digit will be transmitted. If there is more than one code stored, they will be separated by a 2 1 / 2 -second pause. After all stored codes have been transmitted, the cycle will begin again after a 4 1 / 2 second pause. The codes will continuously transmit until the jumper wire is disconnected. Even when transmission has stopped, the codes remain in memory until the memory is cleared.

If more than one code is stored, the codes will be transmitted in numerical order from lowest to highest. The order of the codes does not indicate the order of fault occurrence.
  1. Record the codes as they are received.
  2. Disconnect the diagnostic jumper; switch the ignition OFF .

Clearing Stored Codes

Stored codes will remain in memory until cleared. The correct method of clearing codes is to turn the ignition switch OFF , then remove the EFI 15A fuse for at least 30 seconds. The time required will be longer in cold weather.
Disconnecting the negative battery cable will also clear the memory but is not recommended due to other on-board memories being cleared as well. Once the system power is restored, re-check for stored codes. Only the System Normal indication should be present. If any other code is stored, the clearing procedure must be repeated or the old code will be stored with any new ones.
After repairs, it is recommended to clear the memory before test driving the vehicle. Upon returning from the drive, interrogate the memory; if the original code is again present, the repair was unsuccessful.

Check engine light for volvo 850 wont go off wat else can be the problem if i got a full tune up and put in new spark plugs plus it trembles alot and it shakes when i start it up plus wen i put it on...


Hi, I recommend you access the OBD panel to extract the trouble codes. Then send us the trouble codes for further advice. On 850 models the DLC is located in the engine compartment in front of the module box, behind the passenger side headlamp.

  1. Open diagnostic socket cover and install selector cable into socket No. 2 for fuel injection codes or socket No. 6 (except Motronic systems) for ignition codes.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  3. Enter control system 1 by pressing the button once. Hold the button for at least 1 second, but not more than 3.
  4. Watch the diode light and count the number of flashes in the 3 flash series indicating a fault code. The flash series are separated by 3 second intervals. Note fault codes.

1f there are no fault codes in the diagnostic unit, the diode will flash 1-1-1 and the fuel system is operating correctly.
  1. If diode light does not flash when button is pressed, or no code is flashed there is a problem with the soft-diagnostic system, proceed as follows:
    1. Check ground connections on the intake manifold, and the ground connection for the Lambda-sond at the right front mudguard.
    2. Check the fuses for the pump relay and the primary pump. On 240 models, fuses are located inside the engine compartment on the left side wheel well housing. On 760/780 models, fuses are located in the center console, just below the radio. On 740/940 models, fuses are located behind the ashtray. Access can be gained by removing the ashtray, and pressing upward on the tab marked electrical fuses press. On 850 models, the fuses are located on the left side of the engine compartment behind the strut mount plate. The fuses on 960 models are located on the far left side of the dashboard. The driver's door must be open to gain access to the fuses.
    3. Remove glove compartment, and check control unit ground connections.
    4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Remove control unit connector and connector protective sleeve.
    5. Check diagnostic socket by connecting a voltmeter between ground and No. 4 connection on the control unit connector. Reading should be 12 volts. If no voltage is present, check lead between control unit connector and fuse No. 1 in the fuse/relay box.
    6. Turn the ignition to the ON position, and install selector cable into the No. 2 socket on the diagnostic socket. Connect a voltmeter between ground and No. 12 connection on the control unit connector. Reading should be 12 volts. Press the button on diagnostic socket and note reading. Reading on the voltmeter should be 0 volts. If no voltage at the control unit is present, take reading at the diagnostic socket connector. If reading remains at 12 volts when button is pressed, check diagnostic socket.
    7. Connect a voltmeter between ground and the red/black lead on the diagnostic socket connector. Reading should be 12 volts.
    8. Connect a suitable ohmmeter between ground and the brown/black lead in the diagnostic socket connector. Reading should be 0 ohms.
    9. Turn the ignition to the OFF position. Connect ohmmeter between diagnostic socket selector cable and the pin under selector button. The ohmmeter should read infinity. Press the button and note the reading. The reading should be 0 ohms.
    10. Connect a suitable diode/multimeter tester, or equivalent, between the diagnostic socket diode light and the selector cable. Connect red test pin from the tester to pin under diode light and black test pin from tester to selector cable. A reading on the tester indicates correct diode light function. With no reading on tester, replace diagnostic socket.
    11. Check the system relay/primary relay by connecting a voltmeter between ground and the No. 9 connection on the control unit connector, then connect a jumper wire between ground and No. 21 connection on the control unit connector. The relay should activate and the reading should be 12 volts.

  2. Press the diagnostic socket button. Note any additional fault codes.

The diagnostic system memory is full when it contains 3 fault codes. Until those codes are corrected and the memory erased, the system cannot give information on any other problems.
  1. Press the diagnostic socket button for the third time to see if a third fault code is stored in the memory. If the diode light flashes the same code 1-1-1, there are no other codes in the memory.

To clear the codes:

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  2. Read fault codes.
  3. Press diagnostic socket button 1 time and hold for approximately 5 seconds. Release button. After 3 seconds the diode light should light up. While the light is still lit, press the button again and hold for approximately 5 seconds. After releasing the button, the diode light should go off.
  4. To ensure that the memory is erased, press the button 1 time, for 1 second but not more than 3 seconds. The diode light should flash code 1-1-1.
  5. Start and run engine. If engine will not start, correct the problem before proceeding and start over with Step 1.
  6. Check to see if new fault codes have been stored in the memory by pressing the diagnostic socket button 1 time, for 1 second but not more than 3 seconds.
  7. If fault code 1-1-1 flashes, it indicates that there are no additional fault codes stored in its memory.

Remember that a code only points to the faulty circuit NOT necessarily to a faulty component. Loose, damaged or corroded connections may contribute to a fault code on a circuit when the sensor or component is operating properly. The Assembly Line Diagnostic Link (ALDL) connector or Data Link Connector (DLC) may be located under the dash and sometimes covered with a plastic cover labeled DIAGNOSTIC CONNECTOR.
  1. The diagnostic trouble codes can be read by grounding test terminal B. The terminal is most easily grounded by connecting it to terminal A (internal ECM ground). This is the terminal to the right of terminal B on the top row of the ALDL connector.
  2. Once the terminals have been connected, the ignition switch must be moved to the ON position with the engine not running.
  3. The Service Engine Soon or Check Engine light should be flashing. If it isn't, turn the ignition OFF and remove the jumper wire. Turn the ignition ON and confirm that light is now on. If it is not, replace the bulb and try again. If the bulb still will not light, or if it does not flash with the test terminal grounded, the system should be diagnosed by an experienced driveability technician. If the light is OK, proceed as follows.
  4. The code(s) stored in memory may be read through counting the flashes of the dashboard warning lamp. The dash warning lamp should begin to flash Code 12. The code will display as one flash, a pause and two flashes. Code 12 is not a fault code. It is used as a system acknowledgment or handshake code; its presence indicates that the ECM can communicate as requested. Code 12 is used to begin every diagnostic sequence. Since the inception of electronic engine management systems on General Motors vehicles, there has been a variety of connectors provided to the technician for retrieving Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)s. Additionally, there have been a number of different names given to these connectors over the years; Assembly Line Communication Link (ALCL), Assembly Line Diagnostic Link (ALDL), Data Link Connector (DLC). Actually when the system was initially introduced to the 49 states in 1979, early 1980, there was no connector used at all. On these early vehicles there was a green spade terminal taped to the ECM harness and connected to the diagnostic enable line at the computer. When this terminal was grounded with the key ON, the system would flash any stored diagnostic trouble codes. The introduction of the ALOL was found to be a much more convenient way of retrieving fault codes. This connector was located underneath the instrument panel on most GM vehicles, however on some models it will not be found there. On early Corvettes the ALOL is located underneath the ashtray, it can be found in the glove compartment of some early FWD Oldsmobiles, and between the seats in the Pontiac Fiero. The connector was first introduced as a square connector with four terminals, then progressed to a flat five terminal connector, and finally to what is still used in 1993, a 12 terminal double row connector. To access stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from the square connector, turn the ignition ON and identify the diagnostic enable terminal (usually a white wire with a black tracer) and ground it. The flat five terminal connector is identified from left to right as A, B, C, D, and E. There is a space between terminal D and E which permits a spade to be inserted for the purposes of diagnostics when the ignition key is ON. On this connector terminal D is the diagnostic enable line, and E is a ground. The 12 terminal double row connector has been continually expanded through the years as vehicles acquired more on-board electronic systems such as Anti-lock Brakes. Despite this the terminals used for engine code retrieval have remained the same. The 12 terminal connector is identified from right-to-left on the top row A-F, and on the bottom row from left-to-right, G-L. To access engine codes turn the ignition ON and insert a jumper between terminals A and B. Terminal A is a ground, and terminal B is the diagnostic request line. Stored trouble codes can be read through the flashing of the Check Engine Light or on later vehicles the Service Engine Soon lamp. Trouble codes are identified by the timed flash of the indicator light. When diagnostics are first entered the light will flash once, pause; then two quick flashes. This reads as DTC 12 which indicates that the diagnostic system is working. This code will flash indefinitely if there are no stored trouble codes. If codes are stored in memory, Code 12 will flash three times before the next code appears. Codes are displayed in the next highest numerical sequence. For example, Code 13 would be displayed next if it was stored in memory and would read as follow: flash, pause, flash, flash, flash, long pause, repeat twice. This sequence will continue until all codes have been displayed, and then start all over again with Code 12. CLEARING CODES (EXCEPT CADILLAC) Except Riviera, Toronado and Trofeo: To clear any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) from the PCM memory, either to determine if the malfunction will occur again or because repair has been completed, power feed must be disconnected for at least 30 seconds. Depending on how the vehicle is equipped, the system power feed can be disconnected at the positive battery terminal pigtail, the inline fuse holder that originates at the positive connection at the battery, or the ECM/PCM fuse in the fuse block. The negative battery terminal may be disconnected but other on-board memory data such as preset radio tuning will also be lost. To prevent system damage, the ignition switch must be in the OFF position when disconnecting or reconnecting power. When using a Diagnostic Computer such as Tech 1, or equivalent scan tool to read the diagnostic trouble codes, clearing the codes is done in the same manner. On some systems, OTC's may be cleared through the Tech 1, or equivalent scan tool. On Riviera, Toronado and Trofeo, clearing codes is part of the dashboard display menu or diagnostic routine. Because of the amount of electronic equipment on these vehicles, clearing codes by disconnecting the battery is not recommended. Riviera, Toronado and Trofeo (Non-CRT/DID Vehicles) — Using The On-Board Diagnostic Display System: First turn the ignition to theON position. On Riviera depress the OFF and TEMP buttons on the ECCP at the same time and hold until all display segments light. This is known as the Segment Check. On Toronado and Trofeo follow the same procedure, however, depress the OFF and WARMER buttons on the ECOP instead. After diagnostics is entered, any OTC's stored in computer memory will be displayed. Codes may be stored for the PCM, BCM, PC or SIR systems. Following the display of OTC's, the first available system for testing will be displayed. For example, 'EC?' would be displayed on Riviera for EOM testing, while on Toronado and Trofeo the message 'ECM?' will appear. The message is more clear on these vehicles due to increased character space in the IPO display area.
  1. Depress the 'FAN UP' button on the ECCP until the message 'DATA EC?' appears on the display for Riviera, or 'ECM DATA?' is displayed on Toronado and Trofeo.
  2. Depress the 'FAN DOWN' button on the ECCP until the message 'CLR E CODE' appears on the display for Riviera, or 'ECM CLEAR CODES?' is displayed on Toronado and Trofeo.
  3. Depressing the 'FAN UP' button on the ECCP will result in the message 'E CODE CLR' or 'E NOT CLR' on Riviera, 'EOM CODES CLEAR' or 'ECM CODES NOT CLEAR' on Toronado and Trofeo. This message will appear for 3 seconds. After 3 seconds the display will automatically return to the next available test type for the selected system. It is a good idea to either cycle the ignition once or test drive the vehicle to ensure the code(s) do not reset. Toronado and Trofeo (CRT/DID Equipped) — Using The On-Board Diagnostic Display System: First turn the ignition switch to theON position. Depress the 'OFF' hard key and 'WARM' soft key on the CRT/DID at the same time and hold until all display segments light. This is the 'Segment Check.' During diagnostic operation, all information will be displayed on the Driver Information Center (DIC) located in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). Because of the limited space available single letter identifiers are often used for each of the major computer systems. These are: E for ECM, B for 6CM, I for IPC and R for SIR. After diagnostics is entered, any OTC's stored in computer memory will be displayed. Codes may be stored for the PCM, BCM, PC or SIR systems. Following the display of OTC's, the first available system for testing will be displayed. This will be displayed as 'ECM?'.
  4. Depress the 'YES' soft key until the display reads 'ECM DATA?'.
  5. Depress the 'NO' soft key until the display reads 'ECM CLEAR CODES?'.
  6. Depressing the 'YES' soft key will result in either the message 'ECM CODES CLEAR' or 'ECM CODES NOT CLEAR' being displayed, indicating whether or not the codes were successfully cleared. This message will appear for 3 seconds. After 3 seconds the display will automatically return to the next available test type for the selected system. It is a good idea to either cycle the ignition once or test drive the vehicle to ensure the code(s) do not reset.

If it is not, replace the bulb and try again. If the bulb still will not light, or if it does not flash with the test terminal grounded, the system should be diagnosed by an experienced driveability technician. If the light is OK, proceed as follows.
  4. The code(s) stored in memory may be read through counting the flashes of the dashboard warning lamp. The dash warning lamp should begin to flash Code 12. The code will display as one flash, a pause and two flashes. Code 12 is not a fault code. It is used as a system acknowledgment or handshake code; its presence indicates that the PCM can communicate as requested. Code 12 is used to begin every diagnostic sequence. Some vehicles also use Code 12 after all diagnostic codes have been sent.
  5. After Code 12 has been transmitted 3 times, the fault codes, if any, will each be transmitted 3 times. The codes are stored and transmitted in numeric order from lowest to highest. NOTE: The order of codes in the memory does not indicate the order of occurrence.
  6. If there are no codes stored, but a driveability or emissions problem is evident, the system should be diagnosed by an experienced driveability technician.
  7. If one or more codes are stored, record them. Refer to the applicable Diagnostic Code chart in this section.
  8. Switch the ignition OFF when finished with code retrieval or scan tool readings. NOTE: After making repairs, clear the trouble codes and operate the vehicle to see if it will reset, indicating further problems.
