Question about 1996 Honda Accord

1996 Honda Accord throttle position sensor problem with voltage. The car will start with a voltage on the sensor at .5 volts but when you push on the gas petal the car will stall and the voltage on the sensor will not go up to 3.8 volts which is what is causing it to stall, is what I been told.

Replace the TPS sensor and your car will be fine.

1.3) TPS - Throttle Position Sensor

What is it? This is an electrical device that detects the position of the throttle plate.

Where is it located? The TPS is found on the exterior of the throttle body on the opposite end of the throttle shaft to the accelerator linkage arm. It usually consists of a small black plastic unit with an electrical connector attached to it.

How does it work? The TPS is a variable resistor madeup of an arc shaped carbon track with an applied voltage of 0 to 5 volts along its length and a sliding contact that picks up the voltage at any point along it. The device has three electrical connections, two provide the voltage range along the carbon track and the third (most often the middle connection) sends a voltage to the ECU in accord with the position of the sliding contact point on the arc. This siding contact arm is attached to the end of the throttle shaft. As the throttleshaft rotates, opening and closing the throttle plate, the sliding contact sweeps up and down the carbon track providing voltage readings to the ECU; 0 volts for closed to 5 volts for fully open.
When the engine is at idle the TPS output should signal the ECU that the throttle is closed (low volts) and therefore the ECU should either open the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve or (on some engines) engage the idle speed control motor to maintain the engine idle speed. Sometimes a micro contact switch on the throttle body exterior associated with the throttle shaft is used to detect and confirm when the throttle plate is fully closed.

How to test a map sensor on a 1992 honda accord lx


Use a voltmeter . The sensor has 3 terminals, looking at the terminal end 1 on left should have 5 volts , terminal 2 is earth, terminal 3 is signal to ECU, connect the volt meter , rev engine several times , voltage should increase and return to base voltage every time if Ok. If not Check the unit has a good earth if that is ok replace the sensor.

WHAT DOES P0123 MEAN?


SYMPTOM
P0123-THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE HIGH

WHEN MONITORED
With the ignition ON and battery voltage above 10.4 volts .

SET CONDITION
Throttle Position Sensor voltage at the PCM goes above 4.5 volts for 3.2 seconds .

POSSIBLE CAUSES
  • Clock spring shorted
  • Throttle position sensor sweep
  • Intermittent condition
  • Throttle position sensor signal circuit shorted to 5 volt supply circuit

Start by checking your TPS switch (throttle position sensor) located on the throttle body . They turn while your foot pushes the accelerator pedal . TPS voltage goes from 0 to 5 volts and is easily checked with a volt meter .

Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) System
Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) Overview
The throttle actuator control (TAC) system uses vehicle electronics and components to calculate and control the position of the throttle blade. This eliminates the need for a mechanical cable attachment from the accelerator pedal to the throttle body. This system also performs the cruise control functions as well.
The TAC system components include, but are not limited to the following:
• The accelerator pedal position (APP) sensors
• The throttle body
• The powertrain control module (PCM)
Each of these components interface together to ensure accurate calculations and control of the throttle position.

Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor
The accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor is mounted on the accelerator pedal assembly. The APP is 2 individual APP sensors within one housing. There are 2 separate signal, low reference, and 5-volt reference circuits. APP sensor 1 voltage increases as the accelerator pedal is depressed. APP sensor 2 voltage decreases as the accelerator pedal is depressed.
Throttle Body Assembly
The throttle body for the throttle actuator control (TAC) system is similar to a conventional throttle body with several exceptions. One exception being the use of a motor to control the throttle position instead of a mechanical cable. Another exception is the throttle position (TP) sensor. The TP sensor is mounted in the throttle body assembly. The TP sensor is 2 individual TP sensors within the throttle body assembly. Two separate signals, low reference, and 5-volt reference circuits are used to connect the TP sensors and the powertrain control module (PCM). TP sensor 2 signal voltage increases as the throttle opens. TP sensor 1 signal voltage decreases as the throttle opens.

Reduced Engine Power Mode
When the PCM detects a problem with the throttle actuator control (TAC) system the PCM enters one of the following Reduced Engine Power Modes:
• Acceleration Limiting--The control module will continue to use the accelerator pedal for throttle control, however the vehicle acceleration is limited.
• Limited Throttle Mode--The control module will continue to use the accelerator pedal for throttle control, however the maximum throttle opening is limited.
• Throttle Default Mode--The control module will turn OFF the throttle actuator.
• Forced Idle Mode--The control module will perform the following actions:
- Limit engine speed to idle by positioning throttle position, or by controlling fuel and spark if throttle is turned OFF.
- Ignore accelerator pedal input.
• Engine Shutdown Mode--The control module will disable fuel and de-energize the throttle actuator.

Have you had it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes ?

The commanded throttle position (TP) is compared to the actual TP. Both values should be within a calibrated range of each other. The powertrain control module (PCM) continuously monitors the commanded and actual TPs. If the values are greater than the calibrated range, DTC P2176 sets.

The accelerator pedal position (APP) sensors 1 and 2 are located within the accelerator pedal assembly. Each sensor has the following circuits:
• A 5-volt reference circuit
• A low reference circuit
• A signal circuit
This provides the powertrain control module (PCM) with a signal voltage proportional to accelerator pedal movement. The APP sensor 1 signal voltage at rest position is near the low reference and increases as the pedal is actuated. The APP sensor 2 signal voltage at rest position is near the 5-volt reference and decreases as the pedal is actuated.
DTC P2135
The throttle actuator control (TAC) assembly has 2 throttle position (TP) sensors mounted within the assembly. The powertrain control module (PCM) provides individual signal, ground, and 5-volt reference circuits to each sensor. Both sensors operate within a voltage range between 0.35-4.65 volts. When the throttle is opened from 0-100 percent, one sensor signal voltage increases while the other decreases. The signal circuit for TP sensor 1 is referenced to ground, and the signal circuit for TP sensor 2 is pulled up to 5 volts within the PCM.

DTC P1779 - Engine Torque Delivered to TCM Signal
Engine torque signal below lower limit delivered to TCM. I've read these occur when there is a communication problem between ECM and TCM (Transmission Control Module).

DTC P1791 - Transmission Control Module LoopThe P1779 and P1791 codes set as a result of the other DTC (P0128). When the ECM sets certain trouble codes, these codes will set in the TCM (Transmission Control Module). The TCM will also increase tranmission pressures, which results in the harsh shifting.


DTC P0123 - Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "A" Circuit HighTP sensor signal circuit is shorted to sensor ground. TP sensor signal circuit is open (except 1996-1998 models). TP sensor VREF circuit is open between sensor and PCM. TP sensor is damaged or it failed (it may be shorted).


DTC P0222 - Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "B" Circuit LowThe Throttle control module contains two throttle position (TP) sensors with a common 5 volt supply, a common ground, and two independent signal circuits that vary resistance according to changes in throttle plate position. The ECM measures the signal voltage from each TP sensor, which is a reduced value of the ECM 5 volt reference. As the throttle plate opens from 0% throttle to wide open throttle, the voltage on the TP sensor 1 signal increases from 0.6 (+/-0.2) volts to 4.3 (+/-0.2) volts, while the voltage on the TP sensor 2 signal decreases from 4.4 (+/-0.2) volts to 0.76 (+/-0.2) volts.

If both P0122 and P0222 are set, circuit 486 may be either open or shorted to ground.

Trouble throttling positioning sensor on 1996 honda accord


Use and OBD II scan device to read the value to the throttle position when the throttle is closed, engine off, key on. The value may be between zero and 10 percent, check a like vehicle with the scanner for the exact setting. A call to your Honda service department may give you a quick answer.
