The ECT button (which stands for "Electronically Controlled Transmission")
changes the shift points for the automatic transmission. When engaged,
the transmission shifts later, allowing the engine to get to a higher
power level and accelerate faster. Gas mileage is usually reduced in
this mode. Use it when you need to get up to speed faster; for example,
to merge into fast moving traffic. The normal position for this switch
is OFF. ECT acts like a turbo. Now dont go on street racing ;)

Why would my 1997 RAV4 A/C have lost power when my windshield leaked on the passenger side of my car?

Could be a coincidence. Just try to trace back the electrical wires and see where one is bad, or perhaps even has a shortage, causing the fuse to blow.
Impossible to do a diagnose without being under the hood myself.

My husband just called from the road asking if I knew what it meant with the ETC light in our 1996 RAV4 came on. Any info. I can call him back with? Thank you!

ECT stands for Electronically Controlled Transmission. When you push the button in, there should be a light on the dash that says "ECT POWER". This changes the normal shift times (based on engine vacuum, rpm, and throttle position) to a later point. This means simply that the engine rpms will go higher before shifting to a higher gear when you're accelerating. It helps build speed more quickly but uses more gas to do so.

ECT bottom on left side of the emergency lights

ECT power button is for extra power when towing or accelerating steep grades. What it does is make your transmission shift at a higher RPM than normal, hence you will get less miles per gallon but more power.

The ECT button on the dashboard lights up when i push it, but the extra torque or horsepower is not kikking in anymore. took it to the mechanic he said try it on the FWY, it didnt work. Can you please...

The ETC button does NOT provide "extra horsepower" or "extra torque". Not at all. What it REALLY does is "stretch-out" the shift points between the 1-2 and the 2-3 upshifts. In other words, if the trans shifts at approx 15-18 mph without the ETC on, it will shift at approx 18-22 mph with the ETC on. This is provided to make the shift points "longer" if you are carrying a heavier load than normal. Thusly making it easier for the trans to get the vehilce up to speed. There is a lot of "confusion" about the ETC, but the above text is 100% true.
