Question about 1997 Ford Escort

1 Answer

I have just bought a 1997 Ford Escort Wagon from the auction two days ago, the car was running great as I drove it outside the yard to get it towed home, that was like 2 pm. I came back at night to check if the lights and the signals work and the car was dead. No Battery, so I charged the battery a little bit and placed again, the car started but at first, when i pressed the accelerator, the alternator went on, so I tied up the battery connectors a little bit and it was fine. I left it running for like 5 minutes and stepped on the gas a bit and out of nowhere, the wipers worked, double signals and a beep!!! and the car went dead!! when I checked, the main fuse is cut (the 100A fuse under the hood) and as I removed the -ve connector I noticed some burns on it. I tried to test it and it sparks as it touches the battery pole. It has two wires attached to it, one to the body of the car and the other one to two wires. If I touch the pole with those two (without the ground one) I get some noise from a box that is placed under the air filter. I will buy me a new battery first thing in the morning and a fuse to replace the burned one, but I wish to understand what happenned here and why did the wipers, the signals and the horn work all together and shut the car off. the car has manual locking buttons and I don't think that any car without power locks comes with a factory alarm system. Thanks.

I have a 95 ford escort wagon with a auto trans,, I was getting on a road and there was a bang,, nothing,,,the motor runs, theres fluid in the trans(still red and smells good not burnt) I have no gears...

typical problem is the pump shaft and gear in the transmission,i cant remember if it can be changed with the transmission in it,its behind the pan on the drivers side,i pulled a transmission out of a 95 escort to fix the same problem a few years ago that had 150,000 miles on it and it drove to California and back with no problem

Check your auto parts store for an adapter tube. If they don't have one, a junk yard may be able to find something to work.

I jsut bought this 93 ford escort lx station wagon

If this is a manual transmission the clutch has burned out, it may need to be replaced, if you do not do your own mechanic work I would suggest that you take it to a good local repair shop and have them check it out. If this is an automatic I would still suggest the same, but the actual problem could be more complex. Hope this helps, let me know.

I just bought a 1997 mercury tracer wagon with a 2.0 engine. We have a 1.9 engine that we thought came out of a 1997 ford escort. however from what I understand from wikipedia that did not have 1.9s in...

the 1.9 stopped being offered in 1996. it is very possible that your engine came from a later model run 96 or early model run 97.

but regardless the electronics are different and the engine will not run. sorry
