What are some things I can easily do to get better gas milage?

I am 18 years old. I have the desire to learn about cars and how they work. I just bought a 1999 trail blazer. What are some things I can do easily to improve gas milage? OR to give it more power (cause it seems to have none). I dont mind getting my hands dirty.

Fuel Saving Tips:

1) Driving habits conserve more energy than any other single thing
2) Properly tuned engine
3) Properly inflated tires that are in good condition
4) Plan smart trips. Incorporate as much as possible into a single trip and carefully plan route.
5) Don't waste fuel with needless idling.

Automotive Education:

Start with the basics (don't worry about the high-tech stuff until you understand the basics).
1) Obtain books from library on the theory of operation of internal combustion engines.
2) Learn basic electronics. Books on loan from library or purchase from radio shack (or ebay to save money)
3) Listen to and learn from true professionals - not wanna-be techs.
4) For visual learning, view topical repair and maintenance videos by professionals on YouTube.

There are a few things that you can do that will not cost you a arm and a leg.

  1. Replace the air filter and turn it into a cold air intake
  2. replace the exhaust
  3. change your spark plugs to a higher firing
  4. Add a chip into your computer
These are things that you can do without spending so much money, from there you can go into boring the heads, changing the valves, changing the tranny and rear gear ratio and so forth. But you also need to remember that if it is a 4 cylinder you are more limited then if it is a 6 cylinder.
