I hate to say this but it sounds like a head gasket to me or a sticking thermostat to make that much heat.

Have 97 yukon on hot days going uphill then stoping for awhile it wont start but let set for awhile it will start is this vapor lock and what can i do


Most fuel injected vehicles no longer experience vapor lock, since fuel circulates continuously thru the fuel rail and back to the tank. More likely, you have an electrical part which gets hot once you shut the truck off. You need to test for spark to the plugs, and also correct fuel pressure when it fails to start and see which is lacking.

What is vapor lock?


Vapor lock is when a fluid in a closed system, such as in a hydrolic system, gets get hot enough to boil and produce vapor which unlike a fluid can be cimpressed thus rendering hydrolic systems inoperative. Fluids act as a solid when pressure is exerted on to them but in their gaseous state (vapor) they can be compressed and the pressure needed to move pistons is instead absorbed by the gas rather than applied to the pistons.

Hot starting problems are usually fuel related. When a hot engine is shut off, the temperature of the engine and everything on it continues to rise for awhile as the engine undergoes a period of "heat soak." This can cause fuel to boil inside the carburetor bowl, fuel lines and fuel filter. When you attempt to restart the engine, "vapor lock" obstructs the flow of fuel and the engine doesn't want to start.

This is much less of a problem on fuel injected engines because the fuel is usually under much higher pressure inside the injectors and fuel line. Even so, a fuel line routed near an exhaust manifold or a fuel rail that's exposed to a lot of heat may still suffer the same kind of problems.

Heat soak problems such as these can sometimes be cured by wrapping insulation around affected fuel lines, and/or installing an insulating spacer or heat shield under the carburetor.
A Seasonal Problem

Hard hard starting tends to be a seasonal problem, but may be worse in the early months of spring when refiners are switching fuel blends. Gasoline refiners produce fuel with a slightly lower volatility rating (called "Reed vapor pressure") during hot summer months because lower volatility fuel is less likely to boil and cause hot starting problems. During the winter, they switch to a higher volatility fuel because it makes cold starting easier. But if you still have "winter" grade fuel in your tank when warm spring weather arrives, you may experience some hot starting problems. The problem will go away, however, as soon as the refiners in your area switch to their summer grade fuel.

There is a possibility of a condition called "Vapor Lock" in which on hot temperatures, air bubbles form inside the fuel line, and dont allow the fuel to reach the injectors. One the line cools down, the vapor goes away, and car starts uneventfully. Have the fuel lines checked for leaks or abnormalities. The other possibility is that the EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) relay or computer unit is acting up. These units usually start to fail when hot, and work normally after the engine compartment cools down.
