Question about 1999 Volvo S80

How do i set the timing on my s 80 volvo 5 cyl took off head replaced gasket and timing gears moved im afraid to put the belt back on in fear the cams are not in the correct place and some real damage could happen

They have marks on them and they have to be set to the number one cylinder in the compression stroke and the two marks must face each other and when putting on the timing chain or belt always take the play out of the cams with two closed end sockets or the rented alignment tool.

Cyl 5 is misfiring. It could be caused by about 12 different things,
but the most common cause is your Spark Plugs wires need to be
replaced, or your spark plug in Cyl 5 is needing replacement. Those
are the cheap and simple things.

You could have a coil going bad. On some cars the coil pack is
a 2 cylinder per pack, on others 6 cylinders are on one pack. These
are fairly easy to replace and cost about $100.00

It could be a head gasket is leaking a bit of water into the cylinder
from time to time. You might be able to see the evidence by looking
at the spark plug and comparing it with a plug from one of the other
cylinders. This can be an expensive repair.

I had a miss in my 3.0 Liter Taurus engine and since I am not wealthy I did some research and selected a bottle of head gasket sealer that looks like powdered copper in solution. I did NOT add the whole bottle into the reservoir. I put about 4oz in and took the car for
a ride. The next day I put another 4oz in. The miss went away and
has not come back.

If you see lots of oil on Cyl 5 spark plug, get your credit card out and
head for a trusted repair shop. Rings or valve guides are bad.

next
heads can generally be removed in car
next set the valve timing before removing the belt. check and record the position of the cam timing marks
don't move the crank after the head is pulled

Ive been trying to set the timing on a 95' volvo 850. first replaced water pump 2 days before. finances kept me from replaceing any addition componants at that time. now im paying for it. the belt broke....


It is possible to set the timing wrong....if the belt broke well running I believe this is an interference motor..meaning if the timing is off the cylinder can move up and smack a Valve being exhaust or intake. which means a valve can break or bend cause lack of seal thus no compression. When setting the timing you want to align your marks with Cylinder # 1 it needs to be on the compression stroke..you can do this by removing cyl 1 spark plug and rotating the crankshaft with your finger over the spark plug hole you will feel air press against your finger meaning all valves are closed and your in compression stroke. Then line up your marks and you should have it...I would consider purchasing a compression tester to make sure no damage to the cylinder head....good luck hope this helps

At 115,000 my 4 cyl is leaking coolant into #4 cyl, no detectable coolant in oil,no oil in coolant. I assume head gasket problem. I need advice and opinion and recommendation of what manual to purchase so...


tricky job ...but ok ..just make sure you lock the cam gears if its 16 valve, sometimes you can use a wine cork if you dont have the tool , just put it between the cam s to prevent it from spinning inward ,,when reassembling after the following, so you can keep timing right while you replace the belt ....make sure you replace the belt dont reuse it...while your in there replace the water pump as well if it runs off the timing belt....its due with 115k....as well as cam seals head gasket valve cover gasket kit...intake manafold gasket..exuast gasket....also it is recommended that you replace head bolts in order to get the best tork spec.....and make sure the timing marks are correct and that your top dead center on the compression stroke #1 cylinder.....since thers no oil in the radiator its probly just a head gasket ..but send the head out have it magnaflexed check for cracks and have it decked ..milded flat if needed..it may be warped just alittle...you never know but after all that work you want to be sure...you cuold also replace front main seal while your in there...and valve seals on the head since its off anyway napa charges about 180.00 to redue the head..goodidea........

Replacing a cylinder head gasket is a miss or a hit. In some cases, just replacing the gasket may work. But if the cylinder head is bend, dealer may ask to replace it, because "machined aluminum heads rarely works". In this case the cost may be more than $1000. It is a good idea to send the cylinder head for inspection, in a machine shop. They charge $150 for inspecting, checking, cleaning and if necessary machining the head.
If the timing belt will be replaced this is an extra cost. If someone will just replace the gasket, on a bend cylinder head, it is more likely to blow out again. This problem can be solved if the gasket be replaced properly, checking and taking care for the cylinder head too.
As the coolant warms up, it expands and for that reason you have two marks at coolant bottle. Down cold and up hot. It is normal for the coolant to overflow from coolant bottle, if it is filled to the upper mark with engine cold, way up the cold coolant mark. Let engine to cool down overnight and set the level at coolant bottle at the lover mark cold. If it will overflow again this is a bad sign. The pressure at combustion chamber varies from 75 in idle up to 150 or more in higher RPM. If the cylinder head gasket is blown, then gases are blown into the cooling system, increasing the pressure, the radiator cap pressure relief valve is open and coolant is discharged in the coolant bottle. In such cases it is common for the coolant bottle to boil. You can observe gases discharging in the bottle, mixed with coolant, from the cooling system. These are symptoms of a blown cylinder head gasket. Because you replaced it once, there might be a bad (bend, deformed) CYLINDER HEAD too.
To find it out you have to perform cylinder compression test on your car (PROFESSIONALLY).
1. Start with a normal ("static") compression test. To eliminate rings, valves, holes in pistons, that sort of things. A normal cylinder balance test is also helpful (so you know which, if any, cylinder is presenting a problem). Engine should be warm.
2. Put all spark plugs but one back in. Ground that plug wire to prevent module damage. Disconnect that injector on a port fuel system.
3. Put your compression tester into the empty hole. The test can be done without a Shrader valve, but most people recommended leaving the valve in the gauge and "burping" the gauge every 5-6 "puffs".
4. Start the engine and take a reading. Write it down
5. Now goose the throttle for a "snap acceleration" reading. Reading should rise. Write it down NOTE: Don't use the gas pedal for this snap acceleration. The idea is to manually open then close throttle as fast as possible while without speeding up the engine. This forces the engine to take a "gulp" of air.
6. Now write down your readings for at least the bad cylinder (if there is a single bad cylinder) and maybe 2-3 good ones. Make a chart like this: CYL STATIC COMPR IDLE -RUNNING COMPR - SNAP Cyl 1 150 75 125 Cyl 2 175 80 130 Cyl 3 160 75 120 Cyl 4 160 80 125
7. ANALYSIS: Running compression at idle should be 50-75 psi (about half cranking compression). Snap throttle compression should be about 80% of cranking compression.
Consult a professional with the readings. If the gasket is to bad, you may have very low compression at lease in one cylinder.
If you will get a positive confirmation for a bad cylinder head then you have two options:
REBUILD THE CYLINDER HEAD or REPLACE IT.

is this a rare v6 or turbo 4 cyl (dist in back of head and can be moved)/ does your dist have a small black connector in the very bottom (look hard)
