Where is cooling thermostat located?vehicle has a tendency to run hot.occasionally after running for about 5 minutes it will start smoking somewhat and at same time begin running rough

Before you blow your engine I would take it in and see what the technican say.
If your thermostat was the problem there would be a bottle neck in the hose right before it. If you don't see that its something else.

check the coolant level. check thermostat for correct operation. Have a compression test done to check for head gasket or cracks . All indications are that the motor is overheating badly.

It sounds like you are leaking antifreeze. The heater core is probably clogged up and leaking. Is the carpet wet somewhere under the dash? Not sure where the heater core is on your vehicle (probably passenger side) , but it will be wet on the carpet underneath the heater core if the core is leaking.

I dont have any heat and i need to know how to replace the hearter core, however the windows aren't fogging up so maybe its the thermostat


the only way you should have to replace a heater core is if it leaks or gets plugged up. When motor is hot feel the two hoses that go to the heater core. one should be fairly hot and the other should be the same but if one is just warm then follow hose and locate a flow valve and check for operation. OPening and closing with control hot /cold knob. Check coolant level in radiator while cold as well as fill reservoir to full when cold. Also remove radiator cap when cold and warm truck and check for flow of coolant. if lower radiator hose is hot hot hot and upper hose is cool then thermostat may not be opening properly, or thermostat is stuck open not building heat. You didnt mention if truck was overheating?? If its not i'd check for the flow valve operation, if it is i'd make sure coolant levels are full and waterpump is working.

How to change the thermostat


For 1999 Oldsmobile Aurora 4.0L SFI DOHC 8cyl check thie how to replace a Thermostat:

Parts:
1. Thermostat

Tools:
1. 3/8 in. Drive Ratchet
2. Needle Nose Pliers
3. Screwdriver
4. Cooling System Pressure Tester
5. Socket Set
6. Radiator Hook Tool

Steps:
Step 1 Open the hood and locate the vehicle’s radiator.
o Tip: Make sure the vehicle has cooled down before inspection.
o Tip: Safety Tip:Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or safety shoes.


Step 2 Remove the vehicle’s radiator cap and use a radiator pressure tester to check for leaks.

Step 3 Drain out some of the engine coolant in the radiator so the coolant level is below the thermostat housing to prevent leaking when replacing the thermostat.

Step 4 If necessary, remove the upper radiator hose.
o Tip: A twisting motion may help to initially break the upper radiator hose loose. You can also use a flathead screwdriver to help pry the hose off. Make sure not to damage the hose.

Step 5 Remove the thermostat housing bolts.

Step 6 Remove the thermostat housing.

Step 7 Remove the thermostat.
o Tip: Make sure to note the way the thermostat is installed. Installing the thermostat backwards will affect how the cooling system performs.

Step 8 Clean the mounting surfaces. Install the new thermostat as it was removed and always use a new thermostat gasket.

Step 9 Reinstall thermostat housing and tighten mounting bolts evenly. If applicable, reconnect the upper radiator hose.

Step 10 Refill the cooling system with coolant.

Step 11 Start the vehicle with the radiator cap off and allow the engine to run for several minutes. This allows the air bubbles to escape the cooling system.

Step 12 Reinstall the radiator cap.

Step 13 Run the engine until up to normal operating temperature. Remember to keep an eye on the temperature gauge to prevent overheating.

Turned car off...sounded like it's trying to start w/o keys


This is called run on,or dieseling ,there maybe a timing problem,or the vehicle is running to hot,the temperature is to high,it may not be cooling good,check the temp of the engine,if it is too hot,then the cooling fan may not be working,or thermostat maybe staying closed.If the vehicles throttle is staying open to much,this could be the problem also.

Intermitant temperature


Check to make sure your thermostat works right by monitoring the warming up of your engine. With a completely cold engine, start and run the engine for a few minutes, then put your hand on the top radiator hose to monitor if and when it gets warm as the thermostat opens more and more and note the gauge reading( if it works) the top radiator hose should be unbearably hot within 5-8 minutes. If the therm. opens right it should close right aswell, staying open a little while eventhough the radiator may have cooled may be what you are experiencing causing the rapid cooling and is nothing to worry about. The Hose should not get warm very soon after starting the engine. Regarding you gauge, lets take one step at a time, verify proper op. or the therm.

Its runnining close to hot on temp gauge and after i parked it from driving home fom work i saw some smoke coming from under the hood


If smoke, you may have a leak in a hose. When cool, check for water marks usually coming from the connection to the radiator. Another thing to do but may be dangerous is to load up the radiator with water and start the engine, let it run for about 15min for it to heat up and look for water spray. Also, when parked, is there a puddle of water under the car?

Also, I would check the water level in the radiator (never open when hot), to see if i need to add water. Don't look at the reservoir as a reference. It could be just low.

The key here is you think there may be smoke coming from the hood.

Another thing, if the radiator is full of water, then it could be your thermostat. it is usually located at the end of the top hose which runs from the radiator to the engine. In this picture, you are looking at the top of the engine looking down. This is the location of the Thermostat. If your vehicle is close to over heating, this valve could be getting stuck.

As a test, remove the thermostat and try driving it around to see if it gets close to overheating.

You need a new thermostat if you haven't replaced it lately.
They go bad after a while and its very possible that its broken because its tendency when broken is to not be able to control how much to cool the engine and how hot to keep it.
