Question about Subaru Legacy

Open Question

My 1992 Subaru Legacy L is leaking transmission fluid. It is an automatic transmission. Two days ago it started slipping in first gear I checked the fluid and added a little. That seemed to fix the problem. Yesterday it started slipping again, I figured that I must not have put enough in the other day. I went up to Checker and put some in right in front of the store. Since it was low two days earlier and the problem went away when I added some, I just went ahead and opened my hood and added some without checking/starting my car first. After adding a little I turned on my car, went through the gears, and checked it. It still registered low. I knew that it shouldn't take hardly any more to bring it up to the right level and with the engine running I put the funnel in place and poured a bit more in. That is when I noticed the BIG puddle that was forming under my car. The tranny fluid appeared to be coming out as fast as I was dumping it in. With the vehicle off there is just a drip but with it on there is a constant drip. The drip appears to be coming from the front of the pan . Is this something fixable by the home mechanic, or does it need a visit to the shop? If done myself, is there any thing I should be aware of to look for when apart? Any special hint's, tips or smart advice is appreciated.

The only fluid expansion tank I know of is for the cooling system, and if that is the case you my have a leak in the transmission cooler that is built into the radiator.

SOURCE: The service engine soon light is on. The check

Have the computer scanned if you want a quick scan have Auto Zone or the like scan it for free , they also will give you a printout of the problem code, if any, that may be stored in the computer system.
Trans. fluid is only checked on a running in park warm engine, if it is not running the fluid will read too high on the stick showing an overfilled condition, use only recommended fluid, should have the type requirements stamped on the transmision dip stick.
When filling do it slowly and add only half a quart at a time checking the level each time as to not over fill.
The trans. fluid and filter should be changed every 30,000 miles as preventive maintenance proceedures.
Hope this helps, good luck!!

I suspect that you have higher mileage on the transmission and its a worn out the first gear clutch pack. I would get it checked by a proper transmission repair shop.

The type best used is "Genuine Subaru Automatic Transmission Fluid Type-HP or IDEMITSU ATF HP. you add it through the dip stick hole. You may also wish to add a transmission leak oil to swell the gaskets and stop the leak add it the same way if you choose to use it. both of these should be available at your local auto parts store like NAPA.
