It's possibly a relay/sensor that is out. It's often called a shift lock relay. It's what releases the shifter when you step on the brake.

Do you have column or floor shifter ?
All automatic transaxle models use an electric park lock system. Within the housing assembly, a lock cylinder is connected to an actuator which rotates and engages on the electric park lock solenoid. When the floor-shift lever is not in the park position, the actuator disengages from the electric park lock solenoid slider. This allows the lock cylinder to move to the lock position. With the shift lever in PARK and the lock cylinder in LOCK, the actuator cam is positioned against the electric park lock solenoid slider. This prevents the shift lever from shifting out of the PARK position.
The column-shift automatic transaxle model uses a flexible cable actuator instead of an electric park lock system. One end of the cable is attached to the gate assembly. The other end of the cable is attached to the column mounted housing assembly. This system functions similarly to the floor-shift ignition lock system.
The manual transaxle model uses a push button lock cylinder. A clutch start switch is used. The clutch pedal must be pressed before the engine will crank. Refer to Park Lock System Check .

Replace ignition switch on 99 jeep wrangler


The ignition key must be in the key cylinder for cylinder removal. The key cylinder must be removed first before removing ignition switch.REMOVAL 1. Disconnect negative battery cable at battery. 2. If equipped with an automatic transmission, place shifter in PARK position. 3. Rotate key to ON position.4. A release tang is located on bottom of key cylinder.5. Position a small screwdriver or pin punch into tang access hole on bottom of steering column lower cover.INSTALLATION 1. If equipped with an automatic transmission, place shifter in PARK position. 2. Position key cylinder into steering column as it would normally be in the ON position. 3. Press key cylinder into column until it snaps into position. 4. Check mechanical operation of switch. Automatic Transmission: Be sure transmission lever is locked in PARK position after key removal. If key is difficult to rotate or is difficult to remove, the shift lever-to-steering column cable may be out of adjustment or defective. If key can be removed, release lever mechanism may be defective. Release lever mechanism is not serviced separately. If repair is necessary, the steering column must be replaced. 5. 2009 Chevy Impala key stuck in ignition


Electronic Park Lock (EPL)/Ignition Lock Cylinder Control Actuator: If the vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission and a floor mounted console gear shift, it has an ignition lock cylinder control actuator system in the steering column. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator purpose is to prevent the ignition key from being turned to the OFF position when the transmission is in any position other than PARK and the vehicle may still be moving. The column ignition lock system consists of an ignition lock cylinder control actuator, and a park position switch that is located in the automatic transmission shift lock control switch. The ignition lock cylinder control actuator contains a pin that is spring loaded to mechanically prevent the ignition key cylinder from being turned to the lock position when the vehicle transmission is not in the PARK position. If vehicle power is lost, and/or the transmission is not in the PARK position the operator will not be able to turn the ignition key to the lock position and will not be able to remove the ignition key from the column.

Can not get automatic column shifter on 1996 Chevrolet silverado to come out of park when trying to drive truck unless turn truck back off roll vehicle back and forth while in park then try again usually...


Usually the problem of not getting out of park is caused by the brake switch or the solenoid that locks the shifter in park.
The brake switch cuts off or applies power to the solenoid.
But if you have to rock the truck to get it out the problem could be something inside the transmission.

Put a new engine in a 1998 isuzu rodeo now it won't start. I thought it was the neutral safety switch because the R was on the dash and it was in park


This could be the problem. If your dash indicator is showing reverse but the transmission is in park it could be the safety switch. I'm not talking about the safety switch in the transmission though. In automatics they put a second switch to kill the starter from engaging. You need to adjust the linkage. If your shifter isn't actually on the column but the indicators are there is a cable that attaches the floor shift to the column and that is adjustable. Put the Floor shifter in Park and turn the column section nearest the dash by hand until you find park. Then adjust the cable length as needed. If all you have is the column shift it is still a cable adjustment. Set the emergency brake, drop the shifter to low 1 and adjust the cable linkage by loosening it on the transmission and manually move it all the way to low 1 then tighten it down then move the shifter to park and repeat teh adjustment process to verify that it is properly aligned. Lock the linkage back down and see if the vehicle will start, if it doesn't move the shifter to neutral and try to start the vehicle if the vehicle starts then check the column shift safety switch at the park position to make sure it is still in place and working. Typically, if the vehicle won't start in Park or Neutral it is more likely to be the Transmission neutral safety switch.

Cannot remove key from ignition, car is in park, steering wheel NOT locked in place can drive car and park again but keys will not come out


Try this....I know it sounds silly, but I had an old galaxy that did this same thing....

After you put the car in park, (I am guessing it is on the steering column), do NOT let the shifter go into it's "parked" position, but rather, leaving it in park, pull the shift lever toward you, but do NOT move it out of park. Kind of like you have to do when you are going to pull the shifter out of park, and into another gear, ya know? While holding the shifter in that position, NOW try to remove the keys. Did this work?

It is a Safety Switch, that some vehicles have. However, if the shifter never had the problem before, and suddenly, it is doing this, you may have a small broken part inside the steering column, that will not allow the ignition and steering components to LOCK.

My 2001 porsche boxter S 3.2 will not start in park, but will start normally in neutral, does anyone know why? (it's an automatic)


1.Shifter linkage could be out of adjustment, and not allowing the Neutral safety switch to be bypassed, when in the Park position.

The shift linkage, could move the arm of the neutral safety switch far enough, to bypass it when the shifter is in Neutral, but not far enough when the shifter is in Park.

2.Perhaps the Neutral safety switch is bad, or has come loose on it's mount, and is out of position.

The ignition key sometimes refuses to turn on, and it seems to be caused by the transmission not recognizing it is in park. Playing with the transmission shifter often results in a click which then allows...


U are right, u need the linkage adjusted between the shifter and the column switch, U will have to have the car up in the air to do this, it takes 2 people.

Automatic gearshift stuck in park


The release for the shifter is tied to the brake lites, check to see if the brake lights work, if they don't then test the brake light switch at the top of the brake pedal, if it lights a test lite when you press the brake it is ok, in that case you need to check the little solenoid that pulls the cable to unlock the shifter, it is bolted to the top of the steering column, in order to get at it you will have to unbolt the column and drop it dow.
