Try looking at your air filter. You could have a vacuum leak, like you already said. Also, check your coolant sensor and intake air temp sensor, if equipped.

Three items to test are your throttle position sensor, map sensor and the catalytic converter on the exhaust Your timing is controlled by the computer which relies on primarily those two sensors. if either has failed, your timing may be running retarded. (check for codes with a scanner...most larger parts stores do that free). If the converter has failed, it will cause the combustion temperature to rise causing fuel to ignite before it's supposed to. That also can result in the same condition you outlined.
There's an outside chance you may also have a vacuum leak but usually that will be obvious long before it gets that bad.

Coolant Sensor Bad Message on the Vehicle Information Center intermittently displayed on my 1996 Grand Cherokee. Have changed the Float Switch 3 times and no joy.

The problem Has nothing to do with the coolant sensor, Or for that matter anything to do with the cooling system at all, Check out Jeepforumdotcom & under "coolant sensor Bad fix" You will see that it actually has to do with crummy soldering on the back of the VIC (Vehicle Information Centre), & all that is needed to fix this problem is a bit of solder & some patience, I know this because I have changed my coolant sensor on the engine block and in the reservoir & the thermostat just to be sure & all with brand new original jeep parts not aftermarket rubbish, & all it took was a bit of solder & searching the answer on

Check the inside of the plug and make sure that the prongs are in good condition. They may be corroded. Napa sells a replacement pigtail for the plug.

Message said coolant sensor bad

might have to replace the coolant temperature sensor near the upper radiator and in the reservoir, if you do dont forget to disconnect the battery, it will reset the computer, if it still shows the error it might be a bad connection on the vic. If it doesnt bother you leave it alone, it wont hurt anything, just monitor your coolant level the old fashioned way.

Coolant senser bad were is it on the engine its not on the radiator

If you are getting a coolant sensor message on the VIC (screen above the shifter), then the sensor for that is located in the coolant overflow tank. Sometimes it is a problem with the sensor, other times it is bad soldering and/or a bad VIC.

The temp sensor is located in the thermostat housing (center/front of engine just above belt.

The Coolant Sensor is inside coolant bottle; in this models is common ths message failed; clean the plug and reset your ECU alarms, if the message come on again, replace your coolant sensor. And, really, one message about a bad sensor/signal is one bad work engine.

Good luck.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lerado, low coolant alarm

This same thing happened to mine. It only happened in really cold weather though. I added a few inches more of coolant into the overflow. It fixed the problem. I also discovered if that is not the problem, the sensor in the overflow can go out and a replacement is about 20 bucks.
