Question about 2000 Ford Windstar

1 Answer

I have a 2001 ford windstar with the V6 engine, when traveling for a long distance I started to get Transmission oil leaking and when the car cooled down it was fine......I was told the filter could be plugged and it is leaking out of the vent? Any help would be great! Thanks, Rob

Where is the oil actually leaking from? If it is from the bottom of bell housing the leak is from the oil seal on the shaft at the back of the torque converter. This is transmission out job to get at it. It is best to have this fixed as the low fluids that will result from the leak will result in poor torque converter performance and then to worn gear clutches ruining the whole transmission. As an interim measure it is possible to top up the autobox when it gets low by adding the right (really important that it is right) fluid via the transmission dipstick tube (NOT the engine oil dipstick tube).

Transmission gear assembly and transmission needs inspection. Also check the transmission fluid level. Also is the fluid getting leaked or its low.

My 2000 Windstar runs well for first 20-30 mins then it starts to have engine knock it is also using oil but not burning it. Doesn't smoke doesn't show any signs of leaks under car either

Check your engine coolant. If its brown you may have a blown head gasket which is causing it to leak into the cooling system. (expensive fix) but if it's not brown I'd take it to a mechanic and have further inspection. Hope this helps:)

Transmission cooling fan

I'm sorry. I cannot understand your question. There is no "transmission cooling fan" on a 2001 Ford Windstar. If there was, you still would not have provided enough information about your problem for anyone to offer you any usefull solutions.

I have a 2001 ford windstar van, & my power steering fluid is reddish in color...is that normal?

Yes. The fluid is also red for the Transmission on Ford products and some others. The color is to aid in leak detection, just as Antifeeze is colored to help spot leaks.

My transmission went on my 2001 Ford Windstar LX. The overdrive light was flashing on and off when I was driving it on the highway and when I came to a stop steam was coming out of the engine compartment....

Steven, The trans cooling lines run from the transmission to the radiator tank. This cools the trans fluid. Making new lines is challenging and takes expierence and special tools. Usually the lines will break where a bracket holds the line to the engine or trans. Look for a rust spot or shinny spot rubbed on the line and that is most likely where the leak is. You may be able to buy this line already made but probabally only from the dealer.

2001 ford windstar leaks antifreeze checked overflow container and found oil in it. Then check oil dip stick and no eater was found

Most likely you have a head gasket issue, very common on these engines. Head gaskets need to be changed, the water in the oil can cause engine damge by washing down the bearings.

My 2001 ford windstar's transmition is leaking.

This could be caused by multiple components failing. what i have seen most often on the windstar is the transmission pan gasket leaking, which is maybe a twenty dollar gasket between the pan and transmission, very simple to do, just requires removing between 10 and 20 bolts and replacing the gasket, then refilling the trans. i have also seen lines leaking going to the transmission cooler, which are more expensive and much more involved than the pan.

Transmission leak

you most likely have overheated the trans. and it has blown the fluid either out of the vent on top or out the dipstick tube its self. most cases just a top off and you should be good... there is also a tsb on re-routing the vent tube so it doesnt clog as easy
