Car seemed to run out of gas(sputtering and whatnot)

When it coasted to a stop, there was steam coming from the engine compartment and it looked and smelled like it overheated. put a few gallons of gas in the tank. needle went up on the gas gauge. filled the radiator with coolant and the reservior as well. please help. I have a wife and baby that are depending on me to fix the problem. ps we are stranded in BFE.

Thanks,

I would continue to drive the car. when the light goes out, it means that has corrected itself. The manufacturers put computers in car that will run different models and some times they will throw codes that don't relate to your car. clearing them willsometimes take care of the problem. If the problems continues then have it looked at. If it happens in the future let me know and I can help you threw it.

Check the fuel filter to see if it is plugged.
Remove the fuel filter, and blow air through it in the normal direction of fuel flow. You should be able to blow through it very easily. If it feels restricted, try blowing through it the opposite way, and if there is a lot of dirt coming out, you have found a common cause of this problem. Hope this helps.

I have a gas smell that seems to be coming from engine compartmen

you HAVE a gas leak, the best way for this problem is to use your senses of smell and sight.
Look for gas leaking at the same time smell for the strong smell of gas and locate the area.

2 things I would inspect, your motor mounts, and CV joints. If worn, one or both could cause what your experiencing. See if you can figure out where grinding is coming from, right or left side & check drive shaft CV joint on that side especially. Look close at both boots on them for rips or holes, where dirt has been entering.
P.S. a sloppy/worn CV joint can end up causing irregular wear on transmission as well, so don't let it go too long, if at all.

Sounds like you have a bad heater core. If steam is on the interior you may want to look for moisture around the floor at the firewall.
