5 Answers

I have a 1997 chevy pu 1500 4l60e 4 speed auto. two wd and when you drive for a while, and then come to a stop and then take off it slips through out the whole range of gears. and if you shut off the motor and wait 5 seconds and restart it does not do it no more. any idea It also turns on the check engine light, and check gauges light. Tach and speedometer go to zero, but the engine is still running fine.

I went into the fuse box and fuse 20, which controls the auto traans, the PRNDL, Speedometer/ check gauges light. and warning light, and pulled the 10 amp fuse. It was good however, I did notice some tarnish on the connector legs, and scrapped them off barring the connections. Then replaced it. It is working just fine now and this is funny. I think there is some corolation to the answer you gavee, but so far it has worked. This is my secong GM Truck in this era of vrhiclres. And I hyave found the computer to be a hard item to knock out. But I am sure they have thier problems. I would have guessed the ignition switch. Oh and the daytime running lights had stopped coming on also/ I dont believe that they are on the same circuit as the gauges and such. Can you see if they are. At this time they are on and the vehicle is not coding as it was/

Okay I have done this. when the symptoms I have described start, I get 0740 Torque converter clutch circuit malfunction 0753 shift solonoid A electrical, and 758 Shift solonoid B electrical. Reminding you that the speedometer, Tach, and pretty much most of the gauges act up. Athe tach and speedometer go to 0 and the pndrl indicator on the steer colimn goes out, and the check gauges light comes on. Now I have cleaned off the fuse # 20 wich is to the PRNDL and all of the above items. and now it isnt doing it at least for now. And the engine still runs fine aand I can get the transmission to go back into 1st gear aftedr stopping by shifting the shifter into 1st or low. and get started going and shift to D or the overdrive and it shifts just fine going to high gear. Just doesnt then like to shift back to low. and that is when the dash lights for the PRNDL are out and check lightsa are on.

May 26, 2010 - May 26, 2010 - No 4 wd just 2 wd. I used a scan tool for the codes to get these readings. All of the symptoms I have had, are all in that fuse 20 circuit. It is not shorting due to the fuse has not blown. And now that I have scraped the contact legs of the fuse 20, it has not happend again as of yet. It is like there was no signal voltage getting through this circuit of fuse 20 and it is a 10 amp fuse. As I have said the truck is running great, and I can even get the trans to shift going forward up the g3ears. But once those check lights come on and the tach. and speedometer go to 0 it does-nt want to shift back down at a stop. It stays in high gear. Until you pull the shifter into low. Then you can start again. Now on the side if the transmission, and where the shift linkage hooks on there is like a switch box of some kind there. there are 2 different plugs for electrical besides the speedometer connection. if you disconnect them your truck will not even turn over to start, due to neutral safety switch not closed. I can see where the problem could be something there, but, you can shut the truck off for about 5-10 seconds and then restart, and it works great again. What a barrell of fun.

  • kgriffith60 May 26, 2010

I included the codes a few back. Trans only seems to be slipping when you come to a stop and then try to take off. Now it stays in higth gear and if you lock it into low, you will get the trans to tsake off just fine, and shift to OD without slipping. It is like iot isnt getting the shift voltage and then there is the gauges that arent working at this time and check lights are on. I can use my code reader to clear the codes and only after aI turn off the key and start it again. It will then act just fine for quite awhile . Noow I had a tow package put on and they said they had moved a ground wire from the frame to a short ways from where it was to begin with. On this day this all started, and a little while after I drove it for approx. 20 miles and then this started.

OK this is an electronically controlled transmission, the very 1st thing u do is have the system tested for fault/trouble codes, this is key to finding out the root cause of this, but if the transmission is slipping that is very bad news, the check engine light may be coming on due to the excessive slip of the transmission, it has sensors that measure this at the input and the output shafts of the transmission if the computer sees excessive slipping it turns on the check engine light, your best bet here is to have a Local Aamco transmission test the electronics for trouble codes and road test the transmission, they do this for free as well as many other shops, they want the work so the inspection is almost always free of charge. my experience is 35 years as a master technician in the repair and diagnosis of transmissions.

code P0753 is the shift solenoid A, this is part of the shift solenoid pack, but this would not cause the slip, just not shift right, and by the way just got this replay 3 minutes agao. U have a failed transmission.

You may have a defective torque converter, in fact i am sure of it, that is the P0740, but since u must pull the transmission out to replace the torque converter do u want to take a chance on the transmission still acting up?

I would check the speed sensor,if the odometer is being effected, then this is most likely the problem, but have the codes read with a code reader, this will narrow the problem down a whole lot, auto zone will do this for free.

I am assuming you do not have 4WD or that you cannot duplicate the concern in 4WD

Therefore I am going to guess that one of your transmission sensors is intermittently "shorting" and taking out communications with multiple modules

To confirm this we need a profession scan tool that can check for codes and communications between ALL your computers on this truck... and if I remember correctly you have 9 computers on this truck!!!!

The best thing to do is hook it up to a on board diagnostics (OBD II) scanner available to use for free at your local auto parts store. This scan tool hooks up underneath the drivers side steering wheel and will obtain the trouble code stored inside your trucks computer. Write the code down and then look in the back of a Haynes repair manual and match the code up to the list of codes found in the repair book. This will save you time and money and pinpoint the exact component that has failed.

I would have someone read your code. This sounds like it is a computer issue and that the computer will need to be replaced. That is the only thing that would cause all of these issues

How do you take a 1991 nissan pathfinder out of 4wd?

By now you have either learnt to drive this vehicle or consigned it to the wreckers.....
Read your manual, or get one, or get a friend who knows the vehicle to explain how to do this.
You can slip from 4wd high into 2 WD without stopping, and back again at up to 50mph, but only on slippery surfaces, otherwise you risk damage to the transfer box.
from 4 high to 4 low, go as slow as possible or stop completely.
If you need to use 4 low, the more time you sit still and think about what's ahead, the better.........in fact you should already be in 4 low before you have to ponder life, the universe and everything...
do not exceed 30 mph in 4 low.......and that is where you are now.....Push the transfer box gear lever downwards into the gearbox, push the lever forward to 4 high, now forward again to 2 WD.
don't forget to unlock the front hubs..if they say auto hubs on the outside, just drive backwards a couple of yards in reverse in 2 WD. If they are manual fakers you will have to get out of the vehicles and rotate the arrow in the middle of the front hubs so it lines up with 4 x 2.......
join a 4wd club and learn the right way to do this before you wreck the vehicle, someone else's vehicle, or a life ........

I have a 2006 chevy 1500 when i put it in four wheel drive the front end makes noise and has wheel hop at speeds over ten miles per hour

A 4 WD.is not meant to drive in four wheal drive unless on slippery surface like mud, ice, etc. the front drive wont slip like an AWD and will cause a bind if the wheals don't slip to take out the built up torque. This can damage the front lock hubs. Try it off road and see if it still dose it.

4x4 K1500 Chevy Truck, 4 wheel drive repair instructions

There are a number of different hub systems so this may not work but it has worked for me on both auto and manual locking hubs. On a flat surface without traffic. Put the trans into neutral, shift the transfer case into 4x4, shift the trans into reverse and back the truck up 15-20 feet. Completely stop and shift trans into drive. See if this has locked the hubs in. If not, you can also try following the same instructions except shifting into 4wd low. Sometimes the hubs need a "bump" to get them to slip into place. Keep In mind that if the 4 wd low select works, you need to shift it back into 4 wd high before continuing! When taking the truck out of 4wd to 2wd, I recommend the same, shift to neutral, select 2wd, back truck up, shift back to drive and check. Its entirely possible that your hubs need maintenance (they're often overlooked) but hopefully this will get you going. Please let me know if thus worked or if I can offer other suggestions. Good luck!

What is auto 4 wheel drive?

Auto 4 wd is when the Silverado's PCM takes readings from the front and rear driver shaft and when there is any detection that the speeds are different. The Auto 4WD will activate the transfer case to lock it self to 4wd until the front and rear drive shaft are running at the same given speed of rotation.

Do you get a check-engine light, or does the transmission O/D light flash? Many times, this is due to a speed sensor on the transmission. When the sensor goes, the transmission has to do default shift timing and it will shift very late. Usually, this will set a code in the onboard computer.

That does sound like a linkage adjustment problem.

If that does not work, I'd try a fluid change and filter. But your diagnostics with pulling on the gear shifter is a pretty good indication of a linkage problem.
