Question about 1987 Chrysler Fifth Avenue

1 Answer

I have a 1987 Fifth Ave. It runs great when it's cold, however when it is hot outside and has been running for awhile (highway) it will stutter, stall like its out of gas, and sometimes shut down. It seems to happen only around 100 km, but not all the time... for the first part of the trip, it will be fine 50km later it's acting up. The other day I drove two 300 km trips... It didn't act up once....however it was cold and raining, so this leads me to believe it's temperature related. I have changed the fuel filter, the carb, plugs, wires and rotor. not sure what it could be, I have A timing chain I haven't put on, however when it's running, it doesn't miss a beat. Any ideas?? Are there temperature sensors that can affect this somehow?? Need some Help.

I've looked through the haynes repair manual and cannot find the MAP sensor or it's location.
Is there something else it may be called?
location would be helpful as well, but as long as I can find it in the book, I'll be fine.

Sounds like a MAP sensor

    sorry...I was thinking of a non-carb 5th ave.
or maybe I was just trying to forget all the "fun" I had with these Chrysler's back in the good old days

after rereading your post and doing some research I've got some ideas

So this appears to be purely a temperature issue and there are two things that are computer controlled and use temperature as a baseline

However, you stated you replaced the carb so I am assuming that you replaced it with an aftermarket non-electronic, aka FEEDBACK so we can skip this for now

This leaves us with the most common of all old Chrysler's with a feedback carb.... and that is the SCC (spark control computer)

The Spark Control Computer (SCC) is located on the air cleaner assembly. It gives the system the capability of igniting a lean air/fuel mixture according to different modes of engine operation by delivering an infinitely variable advance curve. The computer determines optimum ignition advance.
The SCC signals the ignition coil to produce the voltage required for ignition purposes. The voltage produced is based on the demands of air/fuel ratio, air and coolant temperature, load and RPM. The computer consists of one electronic printed circuit board which receives signals from all the sensors and computes the appropriate ignition advance. Computer reaction time is measured in milliseconds

I want you do to these next test when the engine outside temperature is warm or whenever the car is acting up...

    1. Warm vehicle engine to normal operating temperature. Place a thin piece of insulating material between curb idle adjusting screw and carb switch (ensure no contact is being made). Remove and plug vacuum line at vacuum transducer. Connect auxiliary vacuum supply to vacuum transducer and set vacuum at 16 in. Hg. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM, wait one minute and compare timing advance against specifications. If correct advance cannot be obtained, replace SCC computer.

    2. With key off, disconnect wire connector from charge temperature sensor. Connect ohmmeter between terminals of charge temperature sensor. Temperature sensor should have approximately 2500 ohms at room temperature (70°F) and more than 6000 ohms at normal operating temperature (200°F).

Won't start

thaw it out then run engine and then with engine warmish cover engine with some old blankets and some cardboard under the car to stop the cold air flow around the bottom of the engine ,or a little special parrafin heater under the engine

1987 chrysler 5th avenue starts up great idles but when you take off it shuts off immedietly cant get it runing

If car has been sitting a long time, there may be water in the gas tank, clogged fuel filter, or dirt in the carburetor - could be all three. Start at the tank and move forward toward the motor. If you do it in reverse order you can waste a lot of time and $$

My car will start and run and runs good for a few

Carb is a possibility but that sounds more like o2 sensors, when its cold its fine but once warmed up runs rough. Once the engine is in closed loop operation rough run could be caused by o2's, and engine coolant temp sensor. On those older computerized engines those sensors are the major components to tell the computer what to give the engine for a fuel mixture.

Tercel Wagon SR5 with 190,000 miles.

Tere may be no solution to this problem because the car has 200,000 miles on it however I can explain somewhat, when engines heat up occasionally we find break downs in efficiencies regarding to moving parts, (loosening up then binding ) this may however not be the problem it may be as simple as fuel pump fatigue after running a while and it can't deliver the appropriate fuel pressure. I would say perform commpression test to assess engine efficiency then evaluate ignition ensuring bright blue or purple spark coming from exposed sparkplug then ensure proper fuel pressure/delivery and check vaccuum pressure to ensure a steady reading of 18-20 pounds of vacuum ... got it if low vacuum replace all vacuum hose to eliminate porous condition of hose therbye leaking small amounts adding up to a larger total accumulative sum. causing poor performance. good luck
