Question about 2000 Volvo S40

2 Answers

I have a 2000 Volvo s40. Yesterday my automatic transmission light began blinking. I stopped by my local volvo dealership this morning and they told me the light only blinks when you need a new transmission, which would run $4,200. I did notice some slipping in the gears at low speeds today. I also realize I can find a rebuilt transmission elsewhere, but wondering if the dealership might have an incorrect diagnosis. On top of the transmission issue, my front left struts need replaced, so not sure I'm willing to sink several thousand into a 10 yr old car at this point.

I would change out the transmission fluid and put some transmission additives in there, see how the transmission shifts after that. Worse case have the transmission rebuilt.

The struts are about $150 apiece plus labor. If the car runs fine besides those two problems I would fix it and keep it, it's alot cheaper than a car payment.

Usually when a trans starts slipping it means that something is wearing out, although there may be something wrong with the control circuits. i would get a second opinion and even a third before deciding on new or used. have you checked/changed the trans fluid? low fluid could cause slipping. too much fluid could also cause slipping due to fluid aeration.

as far as repair. i would recommend replacing both left and right struts. replacing a trans in a ten year old car depends on if your happy with the car, aside from the repairs needed. a new car could cost 7 or 8 times what you would pay for repairs. a used one maybe half that. if you feel the engine and body/chassis are in good shape, fix the car. find a shop you trust that will give you a good price and a warranty. look around for someone you feel comfotable with. don't be intimidated by the hard selling, fast taking mechanic. if your ready for a change, get a new or used car. but choose wisely when buying used. have a mechanic you trust inspect it. you really don't know what your getting. it's worth spending a little now to save a lot later.

one quick browse. this is a used trans with a waranty.
