Coolant temp sending unit or fan relay is faulty. Unplug temp sender and if fans stil run, the fan relay is bad.

My car battery is being drained by the coolant fan remaining on after engine is off..why? I have a 1998 VW Beetle. Thanks

One of two things will cause this problem, first a bad coolant temp sensor, this is what tells computer to turn fans on when temp is reached and then the fan relay would be the other part that may keep your fans running.

Car will not start, fan is draining battery I believe, not sure

boost vehicle but before you do that remove the fuse for the cooling fan till you get it to turn over once its running plug said fuse back in and get it to a shop to have them diagnose why the fan is on to long

Fan will stay on and drain the battery

Very likely that the fan relay has failed...the internal contacts sometimes can "weld" themselves in the closed (on) position and keep the fan running even when the signal that makes them close has stopped. If the relay isn't in the power distribution center, check below and behind the right front headlight near the vacuum reservoir, it should be there.

Something draining battery on 2000 VW Beetle Turbo

If you are sure you have a key off battery drain, what you need to do is connect an ammeter to the negative side of the battery(disconnect the negative battery cable and connect one side of the ammeter to the battery terminal and one side to the and one side to the battery cable) note the reading and start pulling fuses one at a time making sure to put them back in their proper slot when the reading an the ammeter goes down to normal the short will be on the circuit of the fuse you have pulled if any part of these instructions is too difficult have the problem checked by a dealer

Temperature light is flashing red, coolant is

fan relay is under the frame on the left by the fans. but most likely the fans themselves have gone bad check the fuse panel on top of the battery see if it is burned or blown fuse this is caused by the fans going from stop to high speed to many times. you will flat 40 or 50 amp flat blade fuse and both fans sorry for bad news

The temerature light comes on at startup and stays on for 3-4 minutes before going off

If the light is coming on, they should be hooking a computer up to the car to see what the car computer is exactly trying to say. Maybe low coolant, bad thermostat, blockage in radiator restricting flow, it could be a number of things. Does it come on more often in the city or the highway driving?

Astravan cooling fan problems

Hi there,

When cold, remove plug of the temperature sensor usually found at the top of the radiator (but may be on thermostat area)

Check sensor with a meter - should be normally open (non conducting)

If faulty, fit a replacement. (undo cap of coolant system, then retighten, undo and replace sensor quickly to avoid too much coolant loss, then top up system.) You can drain the system, but sometimes causes airlocks and more problems.
