Question about 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

My truck turns over in the AM, but will not start. Then when I let it set in the sun for an hour or so, it starts if I pump the gas pedal?

Try finding a "happy spot" for the pedal instead of pumping. See it it starts then (after sun) When cold, spray a bit of carb cleaner into the intake and see if it starts. If it starts using the carb cleaner, likely its the temp sending unit being out of range. If the "happy spot" works, likely you have an injector that's leaking fuel and by playing with the pedal you are clearing it out.

    Hi Thundergod:

Thanks for the suggestion, it was really my sisters truck and she took it to a local mechanic, first they changed out her starter (ignition) that didn't work, then they changed her distributor cap and rotar button was supposedly burned up? My sister never saw the part which they promised to keep for her. Sound fishy? Anyway it starts and runs fine for now and she is happy. Have a great weekend!

If the truck is now working well, I'd be willing to bet that the shop found something other than the rotor was bad (and corrected it)...rotor is not a "temp sensitive" item. Changing the rotor can sometimes temporarily cover up another problem such as a weak ignition coil. Only a complete scan test will reveal any other potential problems. On the other hand, If it continues to work properly, I'm prone to leaving things alone. Good luck with it!

2002 dodge ram won't start if you step on gas peddle before starting it. What causes this? If you wait a couple of hours it will then start

Fuel injected engines don't need to be pumped before starting, if you do flooding can occur. Make a conscious effort NOT to touch the pedal until after you turn the key to the start position and the engine actually starts.

My 2004 cavalier will not turn over without excessive pumping of the gas pedal. Battery, starter and everything else seems to be fine. Is it the pump or something else?

Try this next time you start it. Turn the key to the run position, do not start the engine. Wait 3-5 seconds and turn the key off. Turn the key right back to the on position and wait for 3-5 seconds. Turn the key off. Repeat the above one more time. Now try to start. If it starts right up you have a fuel supply problem. Either the fuel pump is bleeding off or the fuel pressure regulator is leaking. Pumping the pedal is doing nothing besides buying time for the fuel system to pressurize. Post an engine size and I'll help you locate the fuel pressure regulator. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!

1988 22r pickup have to pump the gas now before starting 15 to 20 times. i didnt use to have to pump the gas before every start if it sits more than 10 hours it wont start unless i start pumping the gas...

Seems like the choke is not turning on. The 22r uses a carb if I'm not mistaken. pump it a couple of times then try pressing the pedal completely down before trying to start it. Then press the pedal half way down. the point is to set the choke when you press the pedal all the way down.

I don't here a humming when key is turned on. Electric fuel pump ?? When I pump gas pedal it some times starts after it sits a while.

Could be a fuel pump although they normally only hum very briefly and change to a clicking sound that means they are maintaining fuel line pressure that was built up quickly when the ignition is turned on.
BTW; pumping the gas pedal is a good way to flood the engine; if the choke is still operational, pressing the pedal once to the floor and then releasing it should set the choke and enrich the air-fuel mix for starting. If the engine get flood, holding the gas pedal to the floor will help dry out the plugs so they can fire again.
