Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf
Hi, if you go out and buy the owners manual then all you will get is the owners manual which dont include the radio security code.
the radios security code was given along side the owners hand book it was printed on a piece of card that you got given with the owners manual when the car was first bought.
each car has its own unique radio code so even if you found someone else who still had the original owners handbook and security card then this code would not give you access to your stereo, so the handbook would not contain the info your looking for.
if all the codes where the same across the range then this would make it easier for thieves to steal the stereo's then sell them on with the code.
so to combat this what the main dealers done was give every new customer their own unique radio code printed on a credit card sized piece of card so that it was small enough to keep in your wallet.
so to solve your problem and get the code your going to have to go to your nearest main dealers and take your car with you along with owners documents and some id to prove the car is yours.
a few years back you could just ring up and give them your number plate details and they would then give you the code over the phone, they stopped doing this due to thieve stealing the stereo's then ringing up and getting the code so they could sell the stereo on.
new laws where brought out to prevent this happening and to slow down the high rate of thefts from vehicles so now you need to take the car and prove who you are just to get the code for the stereo.
now when you take you car their they will ask you if you want them to store the code for you, how ever they will charge for this so the best thing to do to get the code for free is to tell the main dealers that your going to be doing some work on the car that will require the battery being disconnected and then you will need to the code when you have finished doing the work to your car.
they will then give you the code for free make sure you write this down but also ask them how you store the code in the stereo as it can be quite tricky to choose the numbers you need to enter, so as long as they dont put the numbers in for you they wont charge.
i know their is no quick solution to your problem but due to the high value of these stereo's when they came out it means you need to go to main dealers before they will give you the code.
their is no master code so each stereo will have its won code generated based on your cars number plate so the only place you can get this from is the main dealers.
their are places where you can pay to have the code removed but doing this has no guarantee of working so you could pay and end up with a fried stereo so your best option would be going to main dealers and telling them your having some work done and will need the code so as you can use the stereo after the work has been done
just remembered one place they use to store the code when the car was made was in the boot/trunk under where the spare tyre is you may need to take the spare out but usually their is a sticker their with the code on sometimes its their sometimes its not, its not supposed to be their it should be removed when the car was built be most people never removed this sticker so check their you may be one of the lucky few who had it left their.
i just asked a mate and he said the main dealers cant charge for giving you this code and if they ask you to pay tell them they need to check with the manager because i won the car and the code belongs to the person who owns the car and not the dealers so they cant charge for this code just go along and ask them.
let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok
