1996 Toyota Corrrola, 1.8 Has new radiator, good

1996 Toyota Corrrola, 1.8 Has new radiator, good water pump, removed thermostat and coolant still boils over after about 10 minutes of normal driving. Temp guage never goes above 1/2 way.

How to replace thermost 1994 Toyota estema


In the USA the Estima is called Previa, and there may be some differences, depending on whether it has the 2.4L or a 2.2L engine or other options.
Labor Time for this job is One hour.
The water pump on the 2.4 Liter engine is accessed under the vehicle, very likely the same on any engine for these models.
Follow the radiator hoses to the engine until you find the water pump, which is near one of the drive axles.
The thermostat is bolted to the water pump with two bolts.
Drain the cooling system, then using a large pan under to catch any extra coolant when removing the thermostat housing.
Carefully clean the surfaces of both the thermostat housing and the water pump. [Check water pump for coolant seepage, which leaves a crusty beige or pink deposit. If so, replace the water pump.]

Install a new thermostat and gasket (Or O-ring).
Refill the coolant with the same coolant only if it looks clean.
I would also test the coolant to see what the PH is, which needs to be about 7.2 PH. (Coolant will turn acid over time, even when it looks okay.)
Make sure you put as much coolant back into the system as you removed.
Fully warm up the engine, and let it cool down before removing the radiator cap, then check for air in the system, topping up as needed.
The radiator needs to be full to the top.
Also check the overflow reservoir, which has level marks of Low and High, Never fill over the High mark.

The thermostat is located on the side of the water pump, the water pump is located just above the a/c compressor, the thermostat is fed coolant from the radiators lower radiator hose.
Thermostat :
1. drain coolant and tighten drain plug ( easier method : remove radiator cap, get big drain pan, place drain pan under lower radiator hose to radiator connection, remove clamp, slowly remove hose, allow coolant to drain into pan, now is a good time to remove radiator hose and clamp from thermostat housing )
2. remove thermostat cover / cap ( easiest to get at this when front of car is supported by jack stands and right hand side lower cover is removed ).
3. thermostat cap is held on by 3 bolts / remove thermostat.

You will notice that the thermostat's air bleed hole is pointing up and lines up with notch in water pump housing,,

ATTENTION :failure to install new thermostat in the correct location will cause engine to overheat.

1. install new thermostat to water pump, make sure air bleed hole lines up with notch, install and tighten bolts, install a new lower radiator hose, fill cooling system.

upper radiator hose # 17852-65G20

that what fan suppose to do.when engine coolant temperature rise to 190 - 220 degrees the coolant fan will run cooling engine down to 180 degrees.

Want to know how to change a thermostat on my 2004


It Depends on which engine you have, this is how it goes for both. I use a little RTV with a new ring as well.

THERMOSTAT REPLACEMENT (4.2L ENGINE)
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the necessary coolant from the radiator.
2. Remove the generator.
3. Loosen the outlet hose clamp at the thermostat housing. Remove the outlet hose from the thermostat housing.
4. Remove the thermostat housing bolts.
5. Remove the thermostat housing from the engine block.
6. Clean all of the surfaces of the thermostat housing.
7. Clean the sealing surface of the engine block.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the thermostat housing to the engine block.
2. Install the thermostat housing bolts.
Tighten: Tighten the bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
3. Lubricate the inner diameter of the radiator hose with engine coolant.
4. Install the outlet hose to the thermostat housing. Secure the hose with the clamp.
5. Install the generator.
6. Fill the cooling system with specified coolant and concentration. Follow the correct cooling systen bleed procedure for your engine.
7. Inspect all sealing surfaces for leaks after starting the engine.
THERMOSTAT REPLACEMENT (5.3L ENGINE)
1. Drain Radiator and remove the radiator outlet hose.
2. Remove the water pump inlet bolts.
3. Remove the water pump inlet and thermostat from the water pump.
Installation Procedure
IMPORTANT: The thermostat is not serviceable separately. The water pump inlet and thermostat must be replaced as an assembly.
1. Install the thermostat and thermostat housing to the water pump.
2. Install the thermostat housing bolts.15 N.m
3. Install the radiator outlet hose.
4. Fill the cooling system with specified coolant and concentration. Follow the correct cooling systen bleed procedure for your engine.
5. Inspect all sealing surfaces for leaks after starting the engine.

HAve a 1996 Ford explorer v-8 that is overheating,


With cool engine... open radiator cap and look inside radiator. Do you see lots of sediment and calcium growth on radiater tubes? If yes, a coring may be needed. If only slightly bad, a radiator flush may be needed... then refill with 50 percent antifreeze.

Good thermostat, cleaned cooling system, non-leaking water pump, good water flow via water pump... nothing else left (unless you put the thermostate in backwards)..

The thermostat is located in the water inlet housing that is connected to the lower radiator hose.
The thermostat is equipped with a by-pass valve. If the engine tends to overheat, removal of the thermostat would cause a decrease in cooling system efficiency.

CAUTION NEVER drain coolant directly onto the ground! NEVER open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.

  1. Position a suitable drain pan under the radiator drain **** and drain the cooling system.
  2. On the 7A-FE engine disconnect the engine coolant temperature switch harness from the water inlet housing.

To install:
  1. Make sure all the gasket surfaces are clean. Clean the inside of the inlet housing and the radiator hose connection with a rag.
  2. Install the new rubber O-ring gasket onto the thermostat. On 5S-FE engines, align the jiggle valve with the upper side of the stud bolt. Insert the thermostat into the housing.

  1. Position the water inlet housing with the thermostat over the studs on the water pump and install the two nuts. Tighten the two nuts to 78-82 inch lbs. (9-10 Nm).
Don't forget to install a new O-ring onto the water inlet pipe. Apply soapy water to the O-ring prior to installation.
  1. Connect the lower radiator hose to the inlet housing and install the hose clamp.
  2. Attach the water temperature switch connector.
  3. Install the oil filter and check the oil level if removed.
  4. Fill the cooling system with a good brand of ethylene glycol based coolant.
  5. Start the engine and inspect for leaks.
  1. Remove the right hand cover under the engine.
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Remove the fan and generator V belt.
  4. Remove the generator assembly
  5. Remove the water inlet via the two nuts.
  6. Remove the thermostat.
To install:
  1. Install a new gasket onto the thermostat.
  2. Install the thermostat with the jiggle valve upward. It can be set within 10 degrees on either side of the prescribed position.
  3. Install the water inlet via the two nuts. Torque to 8 ft. lbs. (11 Nm).
  4. Install the generator assembly.
  5. Add engine coolant.
  6. Inspect for leaks.
  7. Replace the cover under the engine.

How to replace thermostat


1994 Toyota Camry 2.2L EFI DOHC 4cyl
On both diesel and gasoline engines, the thermostat is located in the water inlet housing connected to the lower radiator hose.

This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.
Gasoline Engines
(see Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7)
  1. Position a suitable drain pan under the radiator drain **** and drain the cooling system.
  2. On the 1MZ-FE engine, remove the air cleaner cap assembly. Be sure to label all wiring disconnected.
  3. Disconnect the water temperature switch harness from the water inlet housing (except 5S-FE engines).
  4. Remove the oil filter on 5S-FE engines. On the 1MZ-FE engines, remove the heater hose covering the housing.
  5. Loosen the hose clamp and disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet housing.
  6. Remove the two nuts from the water inlet housing and remove the housing from the water pump studs.
  7. Remove the thermostat and rubber O-ring gasket from the water inlet housing.
To install:
  1. Make sure all the gasket surfaces are clean. Clean the inside of the inlet housing and the radiator hose connection with a rag.
  2. Install the new rubber O-ring gasket onto the thermostat. On 2SE and 3S-FE engines, align the jiggle valve of the thermostat with the protrusion on the water inlet housing. On 5S-FE engines, align the jiggle valve with the upper side of the stud bolt. On 2VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE engines, align the jiggle valve with the stud bolt. Insert the thermostat into the housing.

  1. Position the water inlet housing with the thermostat over the studs on the water pump and install the two nuts. Tighten the two nuts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm) on 4 cyl. engines, 2VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE; 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm) on 1MZ-FE engines.

Don't forget to install a new O-ring onto the water inlet pipe. Apply soapy water to the O-ring prior to installation.
  1. Connect the lower radiator hose to the inlet housing and install the hose clamp. On the 3VZ-FE, tighten the bolt holding the water inlet hose to the alternator belt adjusting bar to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). On the 1MZ-FE engine, tighten the bolt retaining the water inlet pipe to the cylinder head to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  2. Attach the water temperature switch connector.
  3. On the 1MZ-FE engines, install the heater hose removed.
  4. Install the oil filter and check the oil level if removed. Install the air cleaner cap assembly on the 1MZ-FE engines.
  5. Fill the cooling system with a good brand of ethylene glycol based coolant.
  6. Start the engine and inspect for leaks.
